    Get something in writing from Barclays, photocopy the statement then complain to nationwide and threaten them with the ombudsman. You should also get something to cover your inconvenience.

    The OP has confirmed that only one payment was made in the end. Their statement will only show one payment. It was probably a processing error by whoever took the payment (it's all a bit confusing but i assume that was Nationwide) There's no need to theaten anyone with anything, if the OP speaks (nicely) to whoever has charged them the £8 they will refund it. Might need to put it in writing.

    I did read the thread.

    The following comment led me to believe OP had spoken (nicely) and the bank did not refund it.
