OK, so I made a payment of £600. I get a letter from my bank saying they cannot pay my standing order this month (my house rent) as I have "insufficient funds" and they are charging me £8.
This is totally untrue. I look online and see I had £1,500 IN THE ACCOUNT.
I call Barclays to see what is going on and they say Nationwide have with held £1850. So I'm well in the red.
What can I do here. I'm calling them up, but I've got charged £8 for no reason. Surely I can get Nationwide to pay this. How do I go about doing this from them???????
HELP ME. PLEASE.

What was Nationwides reason for witholding the money? Was this a cheque drawn on Nationwide that you deposited and it possibly hasn't cleared fully yet?0

Logic would suggest that you contact Nationwide to see why they are holding £1850? Have you done this yet unless you know what that £1850 is for?0
-
Which bank was the standing order due to be paid from?
Have you recently deposited money into one or other account, meaning that the balance includes uncleared funds which are therefore not available for payment purposes?0 -
If you know what amount is for than charge is right.
Otherwise talk to nationwide.
It's common sense.0 -
Are you saying you paid £600 to Nationwide from your Barclays account and Nationwide have put £1850 on hold? Paul Lewis of Moneybox is looking for stories like that. The BBC might get something out of Nationwide if you can't."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0

Nationwide deny all knowledge of it. Barclays gave me 3 authorisation codes from them. One x £600 went out, which is what I paid, but 3 of them are "phantom" ones. As I said, I spoke to Nationwide 3 times. They are saying it's untrue. Barclays are saying they are holding the money. The account has gone fine now the money has "sorted itself out". But I'm left with an £8 and still now have to go and say sorry to my landlord for not paying her as normal (as the Standing order didn't go out - she's a bit inpatient).
I asked Nationwide to send me a letter PROVING they are only taking one payment, still waiting for it after they agreed.
How do I contact Paul Lewis?0 -
How exactly did you send this £600 from Nationwide to Barclays? This sort of "earmarking" normally applies to retail transactions - debit or credit card - not to inter-bank transfers.0

I called up Nationwide and made a payment.0
