That is a good price for the Canon. The Brother DPC-385C (printer/scanner/copier) I bought 18 months ago was around the £60-00 mark.
My wife bought an HP printer/scanner/copier from PCWorld a few months ago. It was a bit below £40-00. We were going to buy a set of inks for the older Brother (DCP-117C) that she was using but the HP offer was too good to turn down. It works well but is a bit noisy compared to the Brother and I think she might wish she had bought the inks instead (or got a new Brother). The HP is certainly OK for that money though.
Many models are inexpensive now. I sometimes wonder how they do them for the price. For the cost of genuine replacement printer inks, you could almost buy another printer/scanner/copier that includes a set of inks.Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.0 -
I`ve not seen either printer yet, want one that feels like it will last longer than a month! some of them are so flimsy! I`m still investigating ink..
I have read that - cartridges can be re-filled and the chip reset but you need a chip setter to do this. Is this something that would affect the canon? my HP whilst its rubbish and doesn`t really like compatable ink it does work and I have never had to reset a chip or anything .. it sounds scary. I need all technical things to work simply without hassle (as I havn`t a clue) also does anyone know if these Canon printers connect straight away to windows 7 as have read bits about drivers!! so of course... panic is starting to set in?
Thanks0 -
I'm not sure about chip resetting in printers. I mostly get original cartridges from Internet suppliers. Never as cheap as compatibles but not too bad if you shop around.
Windows 7 might be able to supply a driver for the printer but I always use the manufacturer's installation disk. If installing with this, don't plug the new printer into a USB socket straight away. Start the installation disk first. At some point during the procedure, you'll be prompted to plug the USB lead in and turn the printer on. Don't turn the computer off to do this. When the lead is plugged into a USB socket and the printer turned on, the installation will complete. All should be well after that.Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.0 -
laser printers, you won't be buying tiddly dried up ink carts every other week, a b&w one with a 1500 page toner can be had for £40 - usb though not wireless.!!

Thank you both for your advice.
I`ll have a look at laser printers as I know nothing about them. Do they tend to do everything `smaller` printers do?
Found Canon ink on quite a few sites for £10 for the 5 inks which is cheaper than my HP and they also say cartridges are chipped! so assuming thats ok.0 -

Hi katies mum:) I've just bought the Canon after starting a thread on here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3589333, mine is being delivered on tuesday as I was far too tight to pay delivery charges;), I'm interested to see how you get on with yours, it sounds like the ink you found is compatible rather than original, its says in the info on the printer that using compatibles will stop you using some of the features on the printer, obviously I don't know how true that is yet, have you come across any good value original ink?Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
Some more information about the dye-sub printers mentioned earlier. It doesn't take the place of a standard printer but what it does mean is that when choosing an inkjet printer, it doesn't have to be one that will give the best quality photos, The dye-sub printer does a very good job with those and can be used instead. In other words, it can supplement rather than replace the standard printer.
Mrs mart44 is the one who uses the dye-sub printer. It doesn't need a computer to work. It prints 6x4 photos straight from the camera. There are crop and zoom features included with the printer (but the print is always 6x4 in size). Prints cost about 30 Pence each, or a little below.
The papers and inks are bought as a self-contained cartridge. We buy cartridges containing 100 papers. The ink included is enough only for that number.
It's interesting watching a dye-sub printer at work. The paper makes four passes through the printer. Three of them add a colour layers to the paper, 1st yellow - 2nd red - 3rd blue. The final pass puts a coating over the top. The resultant prints are of very good quality and reckoned never to fade.
The other printer/scanner/copiers are used for letters and more importantly, inserts for the greetings the cards Mrs mart44 makes.
All in all, it works out well to have both sorts of printer for the different jobs. The dye-sub printer used is a Canon Selphy ES-1. It cost about £80-00 as near as can be remembered. There are probably newer and better ones by now.Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.0 -
Glowgirl, it arrived about an hour ago (only cost £3.99 for Sat delivery which I thought was really good). So now I have 2 boxes the Canon and the Epson both sitting here. The more I think about it I`d be daft to keep the Epson which is £60 more!
No the ink isn`t original. Would be interested to hear if anyone with one who uses compatible ink has come across any problems or features that don`t work. (I`m not technical so the printer will most probably do a lot more than I would ever want).
Not found any good value original ink - but would be open to suggestions if anyone knows of good companies to use. I don`t want to have to pay a fortune for ink and am happy to use compatible ink if it works without problems (cheaper the better)
Might not get around to setting it up for a couple of days as have some work to do and whilst there is a bit of ink left in the old HP printer I`m going to use that up rather than waste it. You may get yours set up before me!
Thanks mart44 for esplaining how the other type of printers work.0 -
The BX525WD takes these cartridges
The T1291 has a page yield of around 385 pages at a RRP of £11:99
The T1301 has a page yield of around 945 pages at a RRP of £22:27
Compatibles usually have more ink but are probably based on the T1291 figures

http://www.cartridgesave.co.uk/C13T13014010.html
Although the T1291 is labelled high capacity its page yield isn't much better than standard cartridges such as the T0801 for example
http://www.cartridgesave.co.uk/T0801.html
Compatible costs for the T1291 - T1294 set (T1295) are among the highest for Epson compatibles
The compatible cartridges which contain the most inks are usually here

With the the T1291 containing 18ml of ink and the colours 15ml of ink
A number of the other Epson compatibles from there have 19ml of ink in.
