    It's just a feeling really they both earn about £60,000 a year and live in a small ish flat in London and they just seem to sail through life buying what they want and going on 3/4 abroad holidays a year. They may well be in debt but he has said this wedding etc has cost them their how lives savings!

    :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

    On a side note, I don't know how much any of my friends earn, am I unusual? I know which ones are relatively well/low paid of course, but that's all.

  • No I know nothing about my friends but this is my other half best man so they are close and he knows what they make. They both did really well with their education and training and now make a mint working as bankers in London, not that I'm jealous at all!

    Yeah he said they will have to start saving from the start again which makes me wonder exactly who much they spent lol

    WOW! you went from a 26 to a 16. That's amazing. You did a great job at getting fitter and slimmer.

    Your wedding was what you wanted. I bet the other bride has a huge debt now, because of how they had it. Castles don't come cheap!

    Interesting thread.

    I was very aware when planning my wedding that I didn't want to look back in 10 years time and think "oh, I wish I'd done this..." and I was very keen that my wedding to reflect the quality of life I aspire to, as much as the quality of life I have. For that reason, I spent rather more than most people I know and have stretched myself a little financially in the process...but as a consequence I haven't been left thinking there was much I'd have done differently if I was richer. As I said on the "review your wedding" thread, if I go to a wedding and they pay to put us up in the venue overnight I'll think "I'd have liked to have done that", but that's the only thing.

    Now, of course, that makes me massively unpopular on these threads, because I'm the embodiment of the "want it all, want it now" culture...but I feel happier that in 10 years time, when we're a little better off financially, we won't be looking back thinking "it's a shame we cut all those corners because we couldn't afford the things we wanted just then...". You only get one shot at your wedding :)

    Oooh idiophreak - a can of worms will be opened! Not helpful for the op but I am inclined to agree. We were gong to do our wedding cheaply (I have been married before and managed the whole lot for £3000 including honeymoon!! 13 years ago though) and everyone helped out. It was really lovely and things were special because people chipped in to help with every aspect. This time however, I want to have it as glossy and realxed as possible. It will not be overly extravagant, but it will reflect all the things we aspire to and all the things we enjoy now. Hence my suggestion the OP plans a vow renewal in Australia with her family, In 10 years time she may have the money to afford the things she feels she has missed out on this time around.

    OP please don't spend time thining about what you would do differently and if you must make a list and put it to use for your wedding renewal!

    I wouldn't change a thing about my wedding day, we scrimped on some things and splashed out on others so we had the wedding and honeymoon we wanted.
    In all he planning stages it was all about our day and to us it was perfect, the only downside to it all it was all over far too quickly.

    I feel the same. We are spending half our budget on the reception as that is important to us, and the band and photographer are also high priorities. But we're skipping favours and a 'wedding' car, the cake will be from M&S (the florist has promised to make it look amaaazing), we won't spend much on stationery as I want to make it, etc etc.

    It's all about prioritising!! I guarantee that our wedding will look more expensive than it is. Not that I care what people think we've spent! :)

  • Very true that some things do look more expensive than what it was.

    Examples from mine I know look expensive but weren't:

    Thank you for all the replies. Has made me realise we did what we could with the circumstances that arose. Can't change the fact that I am from Australia and we met at 17 + 18 over a social networking site. I never would of thought I'd live in another country because my bf was from another country, let alone move for that reason and get married overseas. So I guess really that was our expensive part, the phone calls, the letters, the cards, the sending presents. Thats wonderful memories, that we've both kept.

    So as much as you only have 1 shot at your wedding, we've got loads of memories from how we met to look back on. Guess in years to come I won't look at the photos and see my horrible arms, I'll be looking at the happy smiles and remember what a fab time we all had and unfortunately eventually look back at them and see the people who aren't around anymore.
