I too have never heard of a sit down meal for a christening.

Check if you can use the church all, otherwise can one of the parents not host a light buffet?

TBH, all that is required is tea/coffe and cakes and somewhere people can ooh and ahh over the baby for an hour.

(I too would be far too superstitious to arrange a christening before the baby is born :o)

When my son and daughter were baptised, we left the church (all 6 of us, including the kids!) and went for a carvery! We'll do the same when the little man is baptised in the New Year.

I've been to a christening were there were loads of people, a massive all with a buffet and disco, but the parents aren't church go'ers, so I don't see the point at all in that?

I hired a hall for after my children's baptisms and just laid on buffet type food. They'll be plenty of buffet type frozen food about in the supermarkets in the run up to Christmas and New Year if you have space to store it.
  • Thanks everyone for the ideas. Will maybe looking into booking a small hall and just serve some finger food etc. Never really knew what to do after a christening as ive never been to one before so wasnt sure if a sit down meal was the done thing or not :)

Honestly? I'd wait until the little one is at least two or three months old before even starting to plan! Baby will still be very young, you might find that sorting out a party is the last thing you want to do in March.

There's no reason at all why you can't wait till the baby is 8 or 9 months or even older, and the benefit of that will be that he is a little less dependant on you, not feeding every 5 minutes and will actually be able to enjoy being passed around the relatives and being a bit sociable. You'll enjoy it more too.

If you do go ahead I agree with everyone else that a buffet in a hall is perfectly normal and acceptable, a sit down meal would actually be completely OTT I think!

Not a fan of christenings myself, but I've never heard of one with a sit down meal!

Traditionally Catholic children are christened ASAP as babies who aren't christened don't get into heaven. My very catholic grandmother did it herself as soon as I was born as she reckoned it's something anyone can do with it not being legally binding lol x x

Limbo was abolished in 2006 so its not as pressing now. ;)
  • It's funny, though, even though not RC, I have whipped my babies into Church asap for a blessing while the Baptism was pending, so to speak!

Do you have a garden? Any room for a gazebo? If so would you consider putting it back to say Easter time when we have our summer weather ;) and therefore allow to host a small gathering after the Christening. It's what we did for both ours kids.
