But to be honest I'd rather buy a decent bottle of wine at £10 and go round to a friends, than go out and easily spend £40-£50, sometimes £80 on a night out.

Could not agree with you more on these two points.

If you have a fund behind you the pressure is taken off so much by being able to replace the boiler/fridge/car :) from your own resources.

The debt-free journey taught me so much more than just the value of money - it taught me the value of time spent, memories generated, and quite often whilst doing things for free or minimal spend.

aw boo - I thought I'd finally sussed multiquote but it seems not :(

Rising you've not been on for a while either. How are things with you?

Sorry :o - really just plodding along TBH & not up to much.

Now before anyone says anything as I know you all know about my errrrr love of cars :o - I need to change mine :(

Had a bit of bad news on the foot front (had surgery last year and it's not really worked) as there's nothing else that can be done & it'll never get better than it is (ie pain every day) - sorry won't moan about it - I do enough of that on my DFD:o

Anyway, upshot of that, is that I've been really struggling with using the clutch for a while (had been persevering as hoped they'd be able to do something to fix it) - I'm safe but it is painful and I certainly can't drive in town anymore where there are loads of stop / starts and if I'm at traffic lights / pulling out a junction, I can't sit with my foot on the clutch with the car in 1st, which makes (esp junctions) difficult - unfortunately, even driving around here is difficult as it's hilly / small roads where loads of clutch use is needed.

So ..... an automatic is needed and (SOT may get this) I absolutely HATE them :( but ....... no money to change the car (had planned to keep it 5 years as that is the length of warranty) and don't want a loan (don't want to be in debt again & can't really afford to pay one back as things are tight already - unless it's over a long period of time = more interest).

    So ...... plodding on :o

    Rising I sympathise x

I have pains in my knees and back all day everyday and know how hard driving can be. I make DH do most the driving so I understand why you need and not want a car.

Also you might be surprised that I completely 'get' the whole automatic car thing.

Carefully look into your options, a second hand car could be your answer to minimise costs. You need to get the best for the money you have, rather the best you want. Staying debt free could mean sacrifices x

I'm sorry to hear about your foot x
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

This was one of the first threads i read on this forum. I did not know how other people felt about being in dept before, but it has opened my eyes to it.
I have no depts that threaten my lifestyle at all, so i am lucky in that respect, I have a job that pays well, i can pay my min payments forever. I have not even used my overdraft in months.
I own a house(mortgaged) that i rent out and it pays its way mostly, ok i earn £31 a month less maintance which is more that that lol.
    Totally insprinational this thread is.

JG your old signiture was the reason I read this thread from begining to end! as it was so true.

Am happy for you and wish you all the best in your new home, congratulations for all you have done for yourself and your family, and hope your strugles do as much for others as they have to encourage me.
Thanks to all that have typed words in this thread. Lets hope that many more people gain as much encouragement to work towards being dept free as I have.

    Thanks all

Thanks JG did a bit of hunting around last night & did find a 59 plate of the one I'd like but it's in Derby  so a bit of a way to go to see what it's like!

Will keep hunting & may pop into my local garage (who are fab:)) and see if they can find one - sure there's bound to be a log of what cars the dealers hold .... hopefully!

Hi folks! not been on in a while as my laptop has went capoot!! I was able to salvage my spreadsheet onto a memory stick before it completely exploded so not all bad!!

I'm due an upgrade on my mobile phone so been researching whether to get a "decent one" so i can view my spreadsheet or whether to buy a tablet or new laptop, either way I need something to track the household spends or i will get in a right pickle!! I've got a wee pot of money set aside for me but cant seeem to find the release button to allow myself to spend it!! :rotfl:

Bib - good to hear from you!
JG - well done on the move and good on you being MFW, hope to join you next year once I'm back from mat leave!
Rising - sorry to hear about your foot - i dont like automatics either, but sounds like the best way forward!

only 3.5 weeks to go until baby arrives... hopefully!!

  • Morning all newbies and oldies alike. Lianne - good to hear you sounding so upbeat. I had to laugh at your post. Never mind the fact that your laptop went kaput - but omg you nearly lost your spreadsheet!!!! My stomach actually lurched at that prospect - I really need to get a life!

I just replaced my laptop. It was 3 years old and both battery and charger were dodgy. Contemplated a smartphone or tablet too, but settled on a lappy - I find the other screens just too small to concentrate on for a long period of time. Good luck with baby - and get those feet up and resting!!

Rising - my new car is an automatic. I hadn't driven one for about 20 years and it took a bit of re-learning. Bit like going out and about on trunk roads in a dodgem, but it's fine now. I still find myself having to double check the selector lever position when pulling away from traffic lights etc. Given that I passed my test in 1985, that's a bit embarassing! Through buying privately, and it being an automatic I reckon I got the car for circa £1,400 less than a dealer price - so gotta be pleased about that.

Been an expensive week. Calor gas for cooking and annual vaccinations for the dog. Going to sit the teenagers down after lunch and see if we can come to some agreement about days out these hols. Eldest teenager is either working (a good thing) or socialising - youngest teenager is a proper bed bug. I would quite like to actually do the odd family thing in the hols :)

Anyway - having a lazy morning so better go hit the shower and then collect DD1 and see if she's been paid. (She owes me £20!)

    Have a good day all.
