Do you need money in your account to join the Navy?

Options
I am really sorry if I have posted in the wrong place. I am new to this posting and not too sure. I need a bit of advice on the following:

My cousin who is 19 has said that he has applied to join the British Navy and that he has passed all the tests and has basically been accepted. Now the problem is that "apparently" he has been told that he needs to have a minimum of £1000 in his bank account before he can join. My cousin is not the most trustworthy person and he is very irresponsible. He has asked me to co-sign as a guarantor for a loan application with an extremely high pay day lender type lender. He is looking to borrow £3000, which I have told him not to do.

My question is: would the navy really ask for this money to be in his account before he can join or is he making this up?

No way I am going to sign anything but if it is true he needs it, I might find a way to lend him the money.

Could someone please help.

Thank you

I find it hard to believe that they require x amount in a bank account in order to start employment in any event do not under any circumstances co sign for a loan as you will get shafted.

Tell him to sell stuff or ask his parents or own family to help out.
  • Thanks crazyguy. I was thinking the same, I do feel for him as his mum is not around and he doesnt get on with his dad. If he really needed it I would have lent him the money, I just dont want to be taken for a fool with a lie.

Frankly I don't know either but it seems highly unlikely - can't find anything googling.

Based on the above, I would say you are right to be cautious. Agree with CG that a £3k loan from the source you describe might end up costing you a whole lot more, should cousin default. If you really want to help him and he is genuinely in need then he should contribute to this process to show his commitment. Lend him some cash direct (thereby capping your risk) would be a way forward.

It seems to me that in joining the Navy, he will have to assume responsibility for himself day one (and others, in due course); the sooner he starts, the better.

A quick google brought this up - http://prmc.royalnavy.mod.uk/showthread.php?t=34418

Appears that it is not true.

Just enough cash to get you through till payday. Food cost should be taken direct from the pay, so its just what you spend in the shop/bar.

And in a real service you won't be getting to the bar very much until after basic training so you should be getting paid by then. I presume the Navy are the same as Squaddies and Bootnecks on that one.

  • Thanks Alias_Omega, it really did sound fishy to me and there was no way I was ever going to co-sign anything, especially with a payday lender. This will help me stop feeling guilty for not helping him in case it was true. Hey if he really wants to join and become responsible and needs some cash to get him through his first pay,
I would happily give him £100.

Thanks you for all your help with this.

If you are unsure, you can always contact the local AFCO for further information.

That's a good one :rotfl:... People with certain financial difficulties can be rejected; easy target for blackmail etc etc. In theory I suppose someone with a less than satisfactory money record could "be set a target" to prove they can do it, in the same way some people with past injuries etc can be required to produce a 3 month exercise diary for instance...but I seriously doubt it!

Ask your cousin for a letter from the AFCO stating this, let's see what he comes up with then. Nothing I suspect. Are you sure he's even applying?

Can't see it being true,I joined the RAF with less than £30 in my bank account in 84,and that was when the weekly wage I was earning before I joined up was £35!
He'd have all sorts of lectures on finances when he joins & the local bank will come & encourage them to open an account with them.

    Not True

You just need enough money to cover you until your first pay packet . Between 2 and 4 weeks , depending what part of the month you join up

After serving in the Royal Navy myself , I pity your cousins Shipmates who will have to put up with a little untrustworthy Scam artist
