Reclaiming Money From FGW

Does anyone have any experience reclaiming ticket fares from FGW?
I had to make a return trip to London recently (Oct 25 - 26) and, unfortunately, forgot that I'd taken my railcard out of my wallet the day before.
On top of the £36.60 paid for the discounted round trip, I was required to pay £89.50 on the train (outward journey), and a further £32.20 to change my return ticket.
I was advised by the ticket inspector that if I wrote to FGW I had a chance of a refund.
Does anyone have any experience in doing this, or any advice on how to word the letter?

Did the ticket inspector advise on what grounds you could claim? (as the reason for having to purchase new tickets was due to your unfortunate mistake)0 -
He didn't - it was more of a "give it a try - you don't ask, you don't get" bit of advice.0
