Can anyone recommend a better router?

    I only need a wireless router as the modem is already there.

    Homeplugs could be the way forward. Would it be cheaper to get a homeplug and that router or get a router with better transmission through thick walls?

    Homeplugs. I dont think you are going to get a better router. Wifi is rubbish - all hype. It never works as expected.

    Have a look at Broadband Buyer's HomePlug Finder Tool...

    And here's their "Starter Kit" page.

    I think this is the solution: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1409-dLAN-Wireless-N-Starter/dp/B00472MMC6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

    Am I right in thinking that I plug one into the modem and elec socket, the other in an elec socket in the room I need it in, then I can connect to it wirelessly? If that makes sense.
  • Normally, you plug one into a router and the other into the room you need it. I dont know if you can go direct to the modem.

    IIRC, the smaller device plugs into a wall socket then you connect an ethernet cable between the modem/router LAN port and the device port. The larger device plugs into a wall socket in the required room and then you can either use an ethernet cable between it and your PC, or use wifi. :)

    Very simplistically (see later):

    Router ethernet socket
    homeplug [==========] homeplug
    PC or laptop ethernet socket

    is an ethernet patch cable (which you have to supply!)
    [=====] is your mains wiring (which ought to be there already)

    In fact you can have several separate homeplugs each connected to a PC or laptop, but only need the one port on the router.
