Can anyone recommend a better router?

I need a wireless router that works well with (very) thick walls. I have my eye on this one: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/belkin-n300-wireless-router-10991860-pdt.html

Would anyone recommend this one or suggest a better one?
Thanks

You do realise that that is only a wifi router? You'll need to connect it to your existing modem/router. No idea how good it is, but a quick search shows that it is competitively priced.
  • If they are that bad look into homeplugs or wireless homeplugs.

These use your electricity rings to send the signal and so avoid the issue of thick walls. The former you connect to your PC etc by ethernet cable, the wireless ones you generate a wireless network in that room that you connect to normally.

I'm looking at this thread with interest as I desperately need a new router myself - but all tthe addvice I am given indicates that Belkin routers are not the best.

  • I only need a wireless router as the modem is already there.

Homeplugs could be the way forward. Would it be cheaper to get a homeplug and that router or get a router with better transmission through thick walls?

Out of interest, what brands are people recommending to you?
  • If you can afford it, go for a Billion 7800N. Arguably the best ADSL2+ modem router out there. Have a look at the amazon reviews :)

Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p
  • Would this work for me as I already have a modem?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1409-dLAN-Wireless-N-Starter/dp/B00472MMC6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1320235841&sr=8-3

Would it be better than buying a wireless router then buying extra homeplug (Different brand)?

I had a similar problem with my old G router (signal linear through walls rather than 90 degree through) made worse by a neighbour getting a BT hub which overpowered mine.

I looked at the plug in type adapters but you have to hard wire into them? plus they were expensive.

In the end I went for a TPLINK - TDW8960N N routerof Amazon.

V good price, more positive reviews than the likes of Belkin.

I have 3 wireles PCs in the house and I switched two to TPLINK N dongles (weaker reception previously) and retained the other G dongle in the last.

Massive improvement in signal strength and resilience.

Can't fault the performance in my set up.:)

No longer have any issues with the BT Hub:T

If you still want the Belkin one shop around first.

  • If you can find one, a Belkin N1 Vision is pretty hard to beat, probably the best router they made. I have fairly thick stone built walls in my house, but it gives a strong signal through 3 walls and 50ft of garden to my shed :)
If you hunt around there are still a few boxed/new ones about - Belkin stopped making them a s a) at £125 a shot they were to expensive for customers, and B) because of the components and quality used, thye were not making a big enough profit on them.
