Housing in South West now 11.6x average salary

I had a look at the South West on Rightmove and I'm not sure what people are going on about. I found a perfectly good studio pied a terre in a stunning part of Devon for just £10,000. Granted, for that much money it probably requires a bit of work - redecoration, installation of new kitchen etc., but it's easily affordable to the average working man on less than average wage. That working man just needs to have realistic expectations.

I found a house ready to live in.
Love the description!Located within walking distance of the town center, should you own a holiday home or second, this could be a chance to save all your parking worries.

You are still banging on about that single property as if that gives a complete overview of the SW. No wonder you think things are worse than most. Look it's tough out there and it looks like it's particularly tough for younger people in the SW.
Yes we could tax BTL/ 2nd homes etc. as if that's a magic bullet (which I don't think it is) and hope that it helps. Builders aren't building enough houses so I don't see how a government policy to reduce prices will help. Apart from minor changes like removal of council tax discounts for second homes etc. it's very unlikely to happen.
So what are the options that are really available? Well if buying is very important to someone then it's earn more or move out of the area. I'm not trying to be flippant but what else is there?
 Spot on.
At the end of the day its about making choices (and that encompasses accepting facts, facing reality, and perhaps a willingness to compromise)
Just bemoaning the situation on a forum and getting 'annoyed' at others who suggest things doesn't change anything.Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing' 0 0

Conrad had provided 3 or 4 houses in redruth.
Your'e using the exact same tactic you employed last time by framing the quick example properties I gave as '3 or 4 unsuitables', but you keep missing the point that I could find thousands all over the SW.
Those were just off the cuff quick searches, last time I listed about 15 but still that wasn't satisfactory for you.
Bottom line = there are hundreds of thousands of affordable properties all over the SW. My Uncle lives there, he has 4 kids in thier 20's, I know what I'm on about here.0

The report has used what it sees as relevant examples to 'back' its stance and argument.
I have found several 2 bed flats this morning that come in under 100k....and a couple of 2 bed houses hovering around the £100k mark.
A couple earning £16k each and a £10k deposit could afford them?Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing' 0 0

Yes I believe it is. I have pointed out a few reasons for this earlier on this thread.YNWA

Graham is right that a single person on a shockingly poor wage in an expensive area is not able to purchase a house. Everyone else is right that well, thats the way it has always been.
Change one of the parameters - partner up, get better paying job, move somewhere cheaper, look at flats not houses - and the prospects can improve.Emergency savings: 4600

Let be honest a single person on a shockingly poor wage is unlikely to afford a house in many areas.......... let alone an expensive one?Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing' 0 0
