Am I missing something, I couldn't see anything to say it's 3rd year, I assumed it was more likely to be 1st year due to the reference to buying books for coursework - surely nobody does that after their 1st year?

Using books that you bought in first year, in your final year? :rotfl:

Get him to write to them and state that he wants you and your husband (if applicable) to speak on his behalf. They'll try to tell you that they haven't received this so get him to phone up and state to the technician that he wants it in writing, on his account, that you and your husband can speak on his behalf.

Do this, phone them up and insist on speaking to a manager. Was the only thing that sorted my loan out.

he should speak to student services asap. firstly, they may be able to help resolve the problem. secondly, they may be able to give a hardship loan/grant. he may also be able to get his overdraft extended if he speaks to the bank (worth a try at any rate).

however frustrating student finance is, he needs to deal with this as the loan is in his name. he also needs to speak to the uni and use all the official areas of support possible. the logistics mean that this is not something you can do for him. he should be as motivated as you can get to sort this out, so i don't buy the no phone excuse - he's been put in a terrible situation but he seems to be a little lackluster in doing something to fix it.

(getting written permission to speak to student finance on his behalf may be useful to, although he really should be able to do this himself, and even if you get him to send the letter off now, it won't be sorted out quickly)

Right on my way to York no courtesy phone call back from from Yorks st John, nice to say one of their students is on the verge of being homeless will update later thanks all for your comments.

For all sorts of reasons, it is not possible for universities to get involved in this kind of conversation with parents. You need to encourage him to seek help directly from them.

Indeed, may actually be first year. Note to self, don't post when feeling like crap.
  • He really needs to take some initiative and call them himself. I appreciate it is difficult not having a landline and little funds, but you going up there to fix things for him isn't the best way to help him in the long run. Hope you get it sorted.

:jWell I went to York and got him to log on to student finance and yesterday afternoon it changed as submitted and now a revised payment date of 4th nov , bearing in mind his paperwork said it was due 19th september his enrollment day. He is a first year by the way but due to unprecedented demand this year no halls of residence were available, so hes had to find his own house and lived on a mates floor for a week while he waited to se if uni would offer him a place. He applied through clearing at the last minute and we are both totally new to this but finance has had all our details since first week in september We went to the university support for advice and they let him use a free phone to ring so all good and student finance have guaranteed it will be in his bank by friday. At 4.15 I also got a call from Yorks st John so I told them its sorted. So fingers crossed for friday.

Well done, glad it looks to be sorted. As a mum of 3daughters all at university I know how stressful it all is.

Regarding his need for books. Try here first. He may be able to borrow books from the uni library, he could put an advert card up in halls for second hand books or and look on ebay and Amazon .

Student Finance don't pay the first installment on enrolment day [they will have informed your son of this.] When your son officially enroled the University should have confirmed this to SF, then the loan would have been released three days later.

Similar thing happened to my sister last year. Stirling alerted SAAS, when it should have been SF England. Stirling were great about it, and sorted the problem out for her.
