Please help no loan coming through and student finance won't speak to parents

:mad:My son has just received his loan paperwork showing what he will be getting and has been living in York since sepember 19th. He was due first part of maintenance loan amount of £1504 on 19th September which hasn't arrived and a grant of £261 on 20th October, and has had a text to say his loan was going in so wrote a cheque for his landlady for the £300 per month for his room which she requires up front so £600.This has now bounced. He has an overdraft of £500 free on his account of which there is 135 left in it. His bills are about 20 per week for water, electric ,tv licence, broadband and gas and he has literally no money at all. Hes bought only 2 of the 5 books he needs for his coursework and I keep shopping for him for food so he can at least eat.I have aslo paid his first 2 months rent on a loan basis and paid the bond he needed for his share in the house. He has no house phone so I have rang student finance who have spoke to me on one occasion but now say they can't find his letter authorising me to speak to them but he situation is now desperate and I honestly think hes going to have to come home if his rent can't be paid.I feel like crying or screaming with frustration and just don't know where to go from here. Any ideas anyone?

No he hasn't got a phone in the house he is living in with a mobile that cost 40 pence a minute for talk time to an 0845 number and free texts so stuck with no money. I have rang York st John and got to 3 answer phones and left messages asking them to contact me but decided to go through and ask for the universty's help. No one has phoned back or answered at all everytime I ring them. It just gets worse.

Agreed, he's a big boy now, he needs to sort it out himself. Has he tried going to the student union to see if they have someone to help on finance issues? They may let him use a phone there, if not other options include :

    • A pay phone
    • Skype
    • Finding a mate who has a contract mobile and using their inclusive minutes (numbers for Student Finance are available on saynoto0870).

I had a similar situation. I had to authorise it myself to let my parents deal with it, as like your son, I had no landline. If they've lost the authorisation, my parents found a quick letter to your local MP helped. Shortly after my mum wrote to our MP, I received a letter from SFE saying that they were going to give me a loan and no grant. Several months later they revised this to give me the grant I was entitled to as well. I think they gave me the initial loan just to shut my mother up ;)

If no loan at all has arrived, it won't be NI checking as it's 3rd year. My guess would be an incomplete application, university not confirming attendance, or I hate to say your son has spent it all too soon and isn't being entirely truthful.

Am I missing something, I couldn't see anything to say it's 3rd year, I assumed it was more likely to be 1st year due to the reference to buying books for coursework - surely nobody does that after their 1st year?
