Hi, Just a quick one - is there any difference between baking powder and bicarb? If so is it significant or can I just use either in recipes where it asks for one of them to be used?

You can substitute baking powder in place of bicarb of soda (you'll need more baking powder and it may affect the taste), but you can't use bicarb of soda when a recipe calls for baking powder. Bicarb of soda by itself lacks the acidity to make a cake rise. However, you can make your own baking powder if you have bicarb of soda and cream of tartar. Simply mix two parts cream of tartar with one part bicarb of soda.

As far as I know, baking powder is a mix of bicarb and cream of tartar, so no I wouldn't think you can just substitute one for t'other, if it's for baking. The baking powder is for helping cakes and things to rise when using plain flour.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

Yes, shell them first. If you're going to use them soon (next month or so) then just freeze them as they are. If you want to keep for linger you might want to blanche them first
