Can anyone tell me if it would be ok to put a clump of soda crystals into my machine (in with the washing) as I have a pack of about 1/3 that has gone solid so I can't mix it in with my powder like I normally would do.

Any ideas of how I can salvage the remains of the pack or if it would be ok to put it in with my washing?

Also, how do I stop this happening again? It always seem to clump together and go solid.

    Thanks,

    Mel

lol this happened to me a little while back i just took the rolling pin to it and bashed it up a but then added small lumps to the washing powder compartment, though as soon as it gets wet it will go soggy and disintegrate. though i guess you could just put some water to it and use it wet i am just not sure how long it was last that way and if it would lose its effectiveness.

also where do you keep it as it will clump together if it gets moisture in it

I tried to make scones last night and decided (for the third time) I hate my wooden rolling pin.

Any ideas what's the best one to get? Mum had a glass one - is that gonna be better than silicone or anything?

Hiya, i've got a marble one, with wooden handles, and I think it's ace, the marble is slippy and cold, so very 'non-stick' and it's really heavy, so it does the flattening for you, if you see what I mean!

Many thanks. I'll try bashing it to break it down. I keep it on my window sill at the moment as our kitchen is in a total state (we're in the middle of a kitchen refurb so we don't have any cupboards!).

    Thanks again.

I've got a tub of smartprice plain yoghurt in my fridge, still sealed but with a BB date of 6th March on it - will it be okay or should I throw it out?

Providing there is no growth on it, and it smells fine, I would eat it. Remember Best Before is only a guide, unlike Use By. However I often ignore Use By as well.

I find if I put too big lumps of soda crystals or washing powder in the detergent drawer, it doesn't dissolve properly and the lumps get stuck and just sit there. So I break them down a bit.

It would be moisture getting to it: can you put it near a radiator to dry it out and then bash it a bit?

I never put anything in the detergent section of the drawer - I put it straight into the drum as there always seems to be a cloggy mess of undissolved washing powder in the drawer. Putting it straight into the drum means it all gets used.

Also, re soda crystals, I bought a Thermos click-lock container. It's a tall rectangular one and holds 1.3l. It's perfect for one bag of soda crystals. It cost me £2.99, but I live in an expensive area! It means I don't accidentally knock the bag over and get spills everywhere and fits nicely under my sink - and also it stops the crystals getting damp!

Re:rolling pin....both my grans & most of my aunts/ great-aunts used an empty glass bottle that they filled with cold water. Obviously make sure it's one with a good cap! For quickness the other day, I used an empty milk bottle:p

My 'proper' pin is a tupperware one that you can fill with water too, or some folk double it up as a spagetti keeper....not sure if it's still available tho cuz I've not heard of any parties around here for yonks:o I think there's a web site tho....HTH.

Thanks empty milk bottle or glass jar it will be for the time being (think I have one glass milk bottle somewhere - but no milkman now).

That'll be till I can find a nice glass or marble one :p

Think mum's glass one was meant to hold spaghetti too but never did ;)

I did mash on friday and made too much. Put some in a tupperware box in the fridge, will it still be ok to eat tonight? Need an answer on this quite quickly please or I'll need to go get potatoes.
