I bought a whole salmon which he cut into steaks for me, and he asked me if I wanted the head. Of course I wasn't going to refuse :D
Apart from giving it to the cat, is there anything else that can be done with the scrag end of a fish?

Use it, with all the other bits of skin and bones, to make fish stock. Delia has a lovely recipe for garlicky fish soup, in the Complete Cookery Course. Can't find it on her website, so PM me if you'd like me to send it.

I have put butter in the micro to soften, take it out of the foil wrapper first. Just a short time on the lowest setting. It works with hard ice cream as well. Just make sure you keep an eye on it.

Thanks for that - there is one small problem - I dont have a microwave - so if there is any other suggestions they would be very welcome.

I don't think oily fish is any good for making fish stock.
