That's what a debit card does. It takes money from your account and puts into the account of someone else. Not sure what is the garage's problem. If you did not have the money in the account then the transaction would not go through.
Anyway, tell them that you will vote with your feet if they don't stop being silly. Plenty more Citroen garages out there.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Vote with feet, this garage must be socialists and think money and customers grow on trees.

In fact i'd be doubly sure not to deal with them, as they'll probably be out of business soon.

If they wont play ball, go to another Cit. garage in the next town, tell them to get you the one from the garage youve been to,
they will be only too happy to have the sale credited to them and the first one loses out.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Bought a new car 2 years ago on debit card (>10k). Paid then drove away 10 mins later.

They did have a form to fill in for money laundering but said they would rather debit transaction than cash.

Only issue i can see is, Sometimes debit card payments can take a few days to appear on the banking system.

Maybe thats down to the retailer or store though?

I know ive bought stuff on ebay using paypal and its arrived before the account showed i had paid, Also the same with
ASDA, Paid for shopping friday, Check all weekend nothing. Once it too them until wednesday.

  • Sounds like the Dealer's merchant account takes 3 days to clear card payments into their account. Looks like they don't want to release the car until the payment actually shows up on their bank statement.

Which is wrong as once the card payment is approved, they have the money on the way.

Or maybe they've been bitten before with a stolen card?

Sorry, its a debit card you mean, not a direct debit card. The salesman is talking rubbish. As soon as the card machine says 'approved' there is no way it could go wrong.

Do you have a credit card, if you could pay a small amount on a CC and the rest by debit card the cc gives yo protection if something goes wrong. ie the garage going bust etc. The cc has to be in your name though, not your dads or anyone elses. If you havent, can you apply for one and just put off getting your car till you do get one.

Depending on the credit card limit, you could get a cash back card, pay it all by credit card and then just pay your credit card off when the statement comes. A little bonus you didnt expect.

Happy driving and dont forget to haggle hard,

And Welcome to the boards by the way:wave:

I would be extremely surprised if the dealership absorbed the approx 2% credit card transaction cost to them.

The last time I bought a car I paid the balance of about £6000 on my debit card. The sales guy contacted the company/bank, they spoke to me for authorisation and that was that.

    The reference to protection???

The thing you would lose if the garage went bang would not be the car, but the waranty. Remember you will have paid that,;);) realise it or not.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
