Life is a game of chance...

I think it was quite by chance that the banks discovered their absolute power to bring down a capitalist economy

I think it was quite by chance that the anti-capitalist protestors discovered their potential to bring down a major component of the UK Establishment

I think it is quite by chance that we are discovering the impotence of our leaders to deal with our current woes

I think it is a matter of chance as to which form of extremism will succeed in 'filling the void'

Funnily enough I read earlier in the week that the BNP think that their financial troubles are behind them.

Sound like a bunch of bankers to me!

I was under the impression that Meyer Amschel Bauer (Rothschild) discovered that "power" some time in the 1750's

Unfortunately there is still a majority who probably think that they still can

In order for everything in life to be pure "chance", we would have to have absolutely no understanding of cause-and-effect. Whilst for every human action to have the desired effect with no element of chance, we would have to know and fully understand the relationships between every entity in existence.

Clearly we have some understanding of cause-and-effect, yet a lack of information, logic processing errors and the inherent limits of logic processing due to chaos and complexity (i.e. the "butterfly effect") mean that we can rarely (if ever) be certain as to the effect that a particular action will have.

It seems quite possible that the compatibilist theory of determinism may be true, in which case nothing (except perhaps the initial conditions of the universe) happens by chance.

Conversely, if everything happened by chance, there would be no reason to act in any particular way at all. Why get a job if being wealthy is pure luck? Why eat if it's down to chance whether I live or die?

The unpredictability or uncertainty of an event's occurrence does not mean that it happens by chance. But given the limits of knowledge and understanding, we cannot predict every outcome with certainty either.

We exist in a twilight world in the grey area between certainty and randomness where our decisions can only be based on our best guess of the probabilistic outcomes.

Do you find it ironic Mr Trucker that your profession could bring the economy to a halt in 12 hours and yet the banks get the big bonuses and the bail outs?
