Car Insurance Companies, Crooks, or just !!!!!!?

I currently have a policy running on my Fiat Multipla, full no-claims, wife as named driver on 3 years NCD.
I've just taken out a policy for a Wheelchair adapted vehicle, we got it from a family friend so I can take my (currently) Wheelchair-bound Mum out occasionally.
I used a comparison website, put in that I haven't made a claim for over 9 years (max NCD), and went for the cheapest quote (naturally).
Now, when I asked my Multipla insurers for proof of NCD, they say it can only be used for one policy at a time

That's just nonsense.
No claims means just that, you haven't made a claim in X years, so you're supposedly less of a risk than if you made a claim <X years ago, or every few years or so, it's not a 'solid thing' that can only be in one place at a time!
It's to do with you and how you drive, not how many cars you're insured on.

Imagine if you went for a second job, and when they asked if you had any criminal convictions you had to say yes, because you were using your 'no criminal convictions' allowance at your other job

I can however use my Wife's NCD (she's a named driver on both policies), which means I only have to stump up an extra £90...how generous of them.

"Hi. I'm a psychopathic lunatic with violent tendencies, but my Wife isn't, so therefore I'm fit to work at your Creche, OK?"

You're mixing up a No Claims Discount with how long you've gone without making a claim. The discount is earned by having a policy but not claiming on it, and can be applied to just one policy.
Unfortunately, it's how the business works. You can have an accident which is your fault, not claim, and retain your NCD. Your premium will rocket because you've had an accident, but you'll still get the discount. In the same way, insurance companies let you pay to protect your NCD. Then you can claim and still have your discount, albeit on a higher premium.

Its one of the joys of UK motoring. The insurance is on the driver when it suits the insurance companies, on the car when it suits them the other way.

I'm much prefer we did one or the other.

Fortunately both times I've needed to add an extra car, my insurance company have agreed to give me a full NCD based on driving history. If you'd asked your existing insurance company rather than go to a new one, they may well have agreed to do the same.

If your wife is only a named driver, is her ncd from her previous insurance less then two years old?

And on the other side of the coin, would you be happy if you make a claim in the Multipla, and they reduce the ncd on every policy you have, and every policy you're a named driver on?
That's at least five different ones in my case, so I'm going to vote for the current system.

Yes, the policy was only cancelled a couple of months ago.
And yes, your time with no claims should be valid and rewarded how ever many policies you have.

Victor2; I know what you're saying, but just because that's how it is, doesn't make it right or just.

Marlot Not many companies will cover a Wheelchair adapted vehicle, so I had little choice.

I guess you would be happy with only having 3 years ncd on your main policy then, as that's all your named driver has on it. Or you could take her off, and use your 9 by yourself.
You still can't have it both ways.

No Claims is like having a voucher for a free burger. You can only use the voucher once, you can't keep using it to get free burgers.

Nearly all companies insure WAVs, there are only three that come to mind that dont.
  • On the subject of NCD I have just found out that the RAC have a max limit of 9 years however, I currently have 10 years NC. They have informed me that when I come to my renewal period they will only provide evidence of the 9 years. The advisor I spoke to says that this is across the board with all car insurers; is this true only I feel I'm being done over how will I prove to other insurers I have over 10 years NCD? By the way there was no information on their website about this so now in future I'm going to have to phone up and question them about it, not a happy bunny!!
  • you can only get a maximum discount and then you just clock up additional years. It's pretty likely that you won't get any / much discount on that extra year.

This is common. I haven't made a claim since 1974, but still only get 9 years NCD.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
