Problem is, my students tell me they always egg the doors that don't give them sweets. Little sods. I always give them a bit of a rant about that but I don't know if it works.

Many places have introduced bi-laws to stop doorstep selling. Woolton in Liverpool for one.

Experience has shown that even if you display a "no doorstep selling" notice, this is blatently ignored by greedy, dishonest salesmen and women who are not interested in respecting the rights of the householder who does not want to be disturbed, conned or both.

This means companies like sky tv, virgin media and other dubious utility companies.

My understanding is that these byelaws are more often voluntary schemes or remain untested in court and probably unenforcable?

Yes, nothing stops them IIRC - esp the worst charlatans.
  • I used to have a notice on my door that said 'No free newspapers, leaflets or canvassing please', but found that people interpreted 'canvassing' to mean political canvassing only (and it didn't even stop those sometimes, which really did annoy me). I've now got one that says 'No free newspapers, leaflets or 'cold callers' of ANY description please' and am waiting to see if it works. (TBH I find the MSE website one a bit overly aggressive, although maybe it needs to be!)

Certainly my notice didn't keep the Halloweenies away, but I didn't really expect it to (it's really aimed at salespeople, politicians, chuggers and evangelists). On 31st Oct I just accept it prepare for them with the compulsory sweets - partly because I feel a bit sorry for the little ones and partly to avoid the repercussions with some of the older ones.

partly to avoid the repercussions with some of the older ones.

And this is what I hate about the whole trick and treat thing. People being forced to take part for fear of what the reprecussions might be.

I know some elderly folk who live in fear ( yes fear) of the 31st due to the hooligans who go around demanding sweets and money.

Around here shop owners are asked not to sell eggs and flour to children in the days leading up to Halloween which speaks volumes.

Does anyone know what a householder can legally do to remove someone from their doorstep/driveway/garden etc?
  • I have a sign up at the door given to me by the police and I still get knocks from salesmen. At first I'd try and explain that my husband is at work and deals with all the bills and as I have poorly hips I'd appreciate it if they don't knock and make me have to struggle to answer, I'd get rude answers and shrugs. Then I got toucher and started pointing at the sign and telling them to piddle off, hubby told me off for that because he worries I might get attacked.

I found the solution now. I put a sign on the door that says Beware of the Rottweiler. Not a knock since unless it's the postie who knows our dog is a soppy little Cav spaniel. We didn't get any trick of treaters either.
