Requirement to opt OUT of annoying door callers?

Anyone agree? That if you don't want to recieve annoying door callers you should sit in the dark with a "go away" sign on your door?

Nope. Didn't think many would.

Yet it's perfectly acceptable to demand that on October 31st. To expect people to sit in the dark, to expect people to go make signs (that are ignored) or to go out. Rather than inconvenience themselves looking for the houses actually decorated and up for it - to demand everyone jumps into line.

Ridiculous isn't it?

Did you get a lot of annoying knocks on your door last night?

I tried a new concept of not opening the door. It worked quite well

I'd like to see doorstepers outlawed altogether, not particularly concerned about kids on one night of the year.

Many places have introduced bi-laws to stop doorstep selling. Woolton in Liverpool for one.

Experience has shown that even if you display a "no doorstep selling" notice, this is blatently ignored by greedy, dishonest salesmen and women who are not interested in respecting the rights of the householder who does not want to be disturbed, conned or both.

This means companies like sky tv, virgin media and other dubious utility companies.
  • I don't sit in the dark, I just don't open the door. If the little darlings want to waste their time knocking on my door repeatedly when I'm clearly not going to open it then that's their choice.

Could always open the door and then just hose them down. Effective and fun. Win win.

Not long to go now until November 5th when it will all kick off again. I will not be answering the door. At least the children make an effort for Halloween but on Nov 5th they just knock on doors asking for money. What a cheek! This really annoys me. I blame the parents for letting them do it. I never let my children do it. More importantly than being cheeky its potentially dangerous for the children because I cant imagine many parents accompanying them and standing at garden gates, drives etc whilst their children beg for money!

I walked past this kid the other day with a guy. It was rubbish. It was just a turnip (swede?) with a face drawn on it in biro and a hat. There was a sign by it.. "£1 for the guy". A quid! That's inflation for you. Shocking. He got nothing from me, nothing. Try harder!

We had an Everset salesman contribute to a thread here recently (his post removed now).
He was quite open in stating he ignores these signs. He considered it his RIGHT to knock doors as it was his living at stake.
He went on to say the sign could have been put there by a previous occupant and the current householder may WANT him to knock the door.

He really was so arrogant he simply couldn't see what the problem was.

Problem is, my students tell me they always egg the doors that don't give them sweets. Little sods. I always give them a bit of a rant about that but I don't know if it works.
