Orange care Excess charge

Just got a letter today from Orange saying that they will no longer be charging an admin fee on claims (hooray) and instead now they will be charging an excess fee of £50 up from the £15 admin fee (boo).

I'm really !!!!ed off at the moment because if i ever broke my screen £15 is bearable for a replacement but £50 would put it in on the border line of just getting it fixed myself and not pay the £50 or the £6 per month.

This excess will come into effect at the end of Dec, I guess that's when i will cancel my orange care insurance then.

  • Hi arielcohen,

I have also received this letter and I wondered whether they can do this - is this insurance not like any other and something they cannot change part way through the year. What ever happened to "this is not what I signed up for" AND paid for! If not let me know if you find a cheap deal elsewhere.....

is OrangeCare contracted on a defined period basis, or a rolling month to month basis?
If a defined period, then this change could give you an 'out' of continuing with any sort of commitment obligation.
If it's a month by month basis, then as long as they give you notice of any significant changes, you then have the choice whether to continue with this policy or not.
  • Yeah its a month by month bases, they have given 60 days so i think they have their bases covered. Just annoying that i have to find another insurance company when Orange really were very good. They gave you a replacement phone rather then cash to buy a replacement phone, I think giving cash increases the incentive for fraudulent claims (i feel like a new phone, better get the old one stolen) and therefore makes some companies less likely to pay out on a claim. Never had that problem with Orange but i cant justify paying 6ppm and also a £50 excess if anything does go wrong.
  • Their insurance was the only decent thing about the company. I left them in April to go to 3. Phone insurance is quite expensive, i took it out with my Barclays current account, to cover my iphone and my new laptop. Think the escess is £75, which seems in line with what everyone else is charging.
  • Remember, insurance is a business which no right minded person would carry on if they couldn't make money from it.

The price rise probably just reflects how popular smart phones are now and how easy they are to break and lose, expensive to fix and replace and popular a subject they make for a wee insurance scam.

I actually think that a £50 excess isn't too bad really.
  • im actualy furious about this because my phone has been playing up for days the trackerball sometimes doesnt function for hours at a time . i spoke to someone who after quizzing them enough brought it down to £15 then after speaking to someone else got it down to £10 and on the FAQ's part of there website it stated you dont pay an excess fee for orange care customers !!!!! so tomorrow im going to citizens advice.
