We haven't been paid!

About half of us in this office of 20-odd have just checked our balances to find that we have not been paid our monthly salaries as usual
It's not like it's a small two-bit organisation, there are around 160 of us across the world.
So now everyone's getting all worked up, because our Payroll are based in the US and won't be awake for some time...
Some people are having direct debits bounce out of their accounts and are incurring charges - does the company have liability here?

I fear the answer to this bit is no.. but someone will be along who has better knowledge of where you stand legally.Badger_Lady wrote: »Some people are having direct debits bounce out of their accounts and are incurring charges - does the company have liability here?
I hope you manage to get things sorted. Maybe it's possible to phone payroll this afternoon (our time) and see what's happening?
I used to work for a global finance company and they frequently messed up people's wages. Members of staff were worried sick about how they were going to pay the rent, etc. I'll never forget one manager's response: "I appreciate this is inconvenient for you, but the money will be paid to you next month.." said in such a way to imply the employees were making a fuss about nothing.0 -
Do you all use the same bank? as there could be an issue with the bank processing the wages rather than you not being paid.
and has anybody with the same bank as you been paid?
also worth giving your bank a call to see if there is any payment pending0 -
yes, the employer has a liability. However once payrol are awake far better to clarify the problem, call the banks and confirms wages due in tomorrow, etc etc. Saves everyone getting late payment markers on their acounts, just unauthorised OD which is a bit better.
If they are awake before 2 they should be able to do an emergency payment for sameday.Debt free 4th April 2007.

Just checked - the problem spans across a range of different banks, there's no correlation between them and the non-payment.
We've all got our payslips so it must just be a mistake! Two hours until they wake up...Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I worked for an organisation where the person putting in the BACS date got it wrong and so we were paid one day early. This could easily have gone the other way. I suspect it is a mistake but as scheminggypsy said earlier they can make emergency payments.0

From what I understand, if the employer is liable is dependant on your contract about what day payday actually is. For some people I understand that they 'always' get paid on e.g. 25th of the month but the employer has actually stated that their official pay day is the last working day of the month. Therefore technically these employees shouldn't set up any DDs until the 1st of the following month. I don't know if you have anything similar?0

Is possible the company are in trouble and cannot cover this months payroll at the moment.0
