Not sure what you mean there? When you pay for the item, even if it is much later than winning it, you go through a bit in the payment where you confirm your Paypal payment, but you stay on the ebay site. There is the option there to select another address - these are the addresses you have in Paypal.

The bit on the ebay site stays the same though, so my seller would have my home address on the 'order' page but my paypal payment will show my mother's address as the 'OK to send to ' one. When I pay and choose a different address it does not alter the order page on ebay- my mother's address is not even in there.

Likewise my sons often buy things and ask me to pay for them using my paypal- and once again the ebay shows their address but the paypal one shows mine and I get the goods unless I remember to add their uni address as a gift one.

As for seller protection- if you want full paypal protection then you must send to the paypal address that states 'OK to send to'. If you rely on ebay protection it is not as clear cut as to what protection you will actually get if buyer claims non receipt. I think this is something ebay need to be clear about, it is all very well saying a seller can use either address, but they ought to make it clear that for any real protection they need to use the paypal one as most buyers will raise a claim in paypal.

We get many threads on here with sellers saying that the ebay and the paypal addresses are different and that's why we have the postage sticky as that clearly states that for paypal seller protection you must send to the paypal one.

As far as I am aware, the Paypal address that is selected during the payment stage IS passed through and updated on the ebay order detail.

I'm sure I read some ebay official text (possibly an announcement) about it earlier this year but can't find it now.

I believe ebay made the change because you can't reasonably expect large sellers who are processing hundreds of items a day to double check every address against Paypal.

Large sellers download the order detail from ebay because the Paypal data extract is worse than useless.

I have only ever sent to the address in the ebay order detail - out of thousands (10000+) of transactions on my business account I have never had a problem. Early on, we did double check all the emails against Paypal and not a single one was ever different.

Really? I don't recall seeing any recently on here or the wholesale forum. If there are the odd one or two I would like to see the details as I am sure there is more to the story.

I just wanted to thank you all for your replies. I did get the address from ebay not paypal so hadn't looked at the transaction.

I had left the option to collect in person I realise now. So she just picked that option because it was free. She was a nightmare buyer and I won't be selling again in a hurry

  • Not sure if it will do the trick but you can change this by going to "myAccount" tab, selecting site preferences which is to the left of the screen....then click the show button on payment from buyers.....and select "NO" to "Allow buyers to edit payment totals"
Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid doing altogether.:D
