Middle class workers aged 50 and above are being forced to delay their retirement until they are ‘at least 70’, with many blaming their children, a report revealed yesterday.

Partially agree but...
40-50 years ago there were a very large number of un- and semi-skilled jobs which a majority of the population could get and would expect to get. In those days and for a majority just getting an "office" job meant you had a chance of making something of your life.
As you say it was only the top 10% who had the chance of a good university education and would achieve the really well paid jobs.
Nowadays there are far fewer unskilled jobs around and the country needs a far higher number of people trained to university level. But of course still only the top 10% can get the really well paid jobs.
What this means is that we have many people trained to a level that would have got them into the top 10% previously and they therefore have the expectation that they should be in that group. Unfortunately basic mathematics says they cant all be. Result: whinging and a general feel of being hard-done-by.
This is why degrees are worthless nowadays.
They only make you "Mr Average" and who wants him.
You have to be something special to get those prized positions, something graduates were when degress were hard to come by.
Sadly nowadays a graduate is no different from a school leaver of the past, there are just so many of them.
We all know what happens when you flood the market with something and unfortunately this is no different.0 -

God help your generation then if your attitude is anything to go by.
You'll be bringing up your kids to be such wingeing self entitled brats they'll be smothering you in your sleep.
You seriously need to grow up a bit before posting childish comments like that.0 -

What are these skills that are apparently required in a modern economy that are gained by a degree in media studies?
Decent O level results are enough to decide who has the intelligence to do 90% of jobs.0 -

Any skills that keep the youngsters in education and off the unemployment register, because there are no jobs for them.
I can't think of any other reason to be honest.0 -

Weirdly there are jobs outside London, even still.
Some good ones too. More media related ones will start appearing in a little ole place called Salford.0 -
When it comes to degrees in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law, engineering......... Yes.
Fair enough opinion again I dont entirely disagree. Now where do you draw the line? Quite often I see it reported that we dont have enough scientists (I mean proper ones i.e chemists, physics, Biologists). So do we pay for them too? Then what about those that do say environmental science that too? You see where I am going, there is no black and white line so it becomes blurred and we end up with the system we have today.

Some of the ranters on here seem to think that a group of people loosely connected by birth date have conspired to take a dump on their own children. Things have just happened. It wasn't part of some evil plan.
My parents were born in the 50s into working class households. My dad went to grammar school and then to university and got a good engineering job and eventually bought a nice family house on a sensible multiple of one salary which they've lived in ever since. They joined the lower middle classes some time in the late 80s (I date it from when we went on holiday to Center Parcs rather than a Torquay B&B). They live uneventful lives and are prudent with their money. The house is now worth quite a lot which they find rather puzzling. These aren't the actions of spiteful, hate-crazed maniacs hell-bent on destroying the British economy, they are just people who worked hard, saved hard, paid their taxes and aren't much interested in politics. They are an EYESORES!!!!0
