Some time ago I was given a Philips GoGear MP3 player. It's pretty old now and I've been using it for quite a while. I'm happy with it, except that it will only take MP3 format files, and I would like to find one that takes the newer versions, like AAC.

I've been looking online (Ebay, amazon, etc) to see if there's anything suitable, but I'm finding that loads of them have features I don't need, like radio or video. All I really want to do is to load music or spoken-word tracks onto it and play them.

Has anyone got any recommendations? Also I'm wondering how much is a reasonable price to pay.

  • How long is a piece of string? How much storage do you want?

You can get very reasonably priced players, like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005LFSYZ2

For 40 quid, it'll play nearly any audio format you throw at it (including AAC, FLAC and Ogg Vorbis)

It's only 4gb, but you can always buy 16gb memory cards for about £13, turning it into 20gb of portable storage, for under £55.

Yes, it's got a radio and a tiny colour screen.. but it's a good brand, cheap, high-spec and with good reviews

    Thanks.
4gb should be more than enough. The one I've got has 2gb, I think, and I've never run out of space on it!
I guess I've just got my money-saving hat on and don't want to pay for features I'm not going to use, but maybe it's the norm for them to come with radio and video now?
  • Well, if you want 'dirt cheap' you could go for something like this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/2GB-Player-Ipod-Shuffle-Design/dp/B00140OXCG/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1320082948&sr=1-5

I'd say the video component adds to the price, but £40 for a branded, well rated player is pretty good. I'd expect it to last a lot longer than a cheap import like i just linked to.

I agree with ringo on going for a Sandisk player. Very good quality for very reasonable money. You can get a refurbished 1st generation 2GB Sansa Clip for £25 inc. delivery on Amazon (or a brand new 1GB version for £27) if you want quality at a very low price.

You are right, - the cheaper one has had loads of reviews on amazon, mostly from people saying it's pants!! False economy, I think.

Just a thought, but if you've got your money saving hat on and are happy with the Philips, why bother replacing it? There are many free programs available for converting AAC and other formats to MP3.

That would be good. I had been doing this on someone else's computer using Windows Media Player. (It saved the file as an MP3). But it doesn't seem to work on my computer, it just saves it as a .wma

Just a quick question, apropos post #7
Could someone point me in the direction of any websites (or discs on computer mags, etc) that would enable me to download software to convert a wma or an AAC file to an MP3? I have tried Aimersoft.com, but their free trial is very limiting.

    Have you tried Super?

I should add that I haven't (don't need it as I run under Linux), but others here have and found it works well for them.
  • You can convert non-protected AACs into mp3s in iTunes - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=275717
