What are the pro's and cons for buying a car via Motability verses leasing one...?
My aunty has been awarded HRM for life and wants to get a car.
I've told her to lease one for the three years as all she has to pay is fuel. But she wants to buy it as the car will be then hers and my Uncle can use it for work. But buying it will mean they are responsible for the maintence of the car.
They are on a low-ish income and currently have a V reg Fiesa, which is cheap to run.
Alos, if you chose to buy your Motability car each month do they credoit check you? As they both have poor credit history. Again, this was another reason for me telling her to just lease a new car every three years from them.

Hi,the big plus for leasing is as you said she only has to put fuel in and with the cost of insurance, depreciation, and maintenance it makes sense. On the other hand as it would be for her use only that would exclude your uncle using it for his work so perhaps rather than have 2 cars and the costs involved she would be better off using the money to buy a 1 or 2 year old model. One thing id add for your aunts benefit, there is no such a thing anymore as HRM awarded for "life" She may have an "indefinite" award but she can still be called for a medical to see if her condition has either improved or worsened and as you will see on other threads people who have had HRM and HRC for many years were suddenly refused these awards as the DWP is toughening up its criteria.Best of luck to her anyway.0 -
The Motabilty vehicle is to be used for the recipients benefit.
If a spouse is going out to work for both his and his wifes benefit (as most do ), then it it perfectly reasonable for the Motabilty car to be legally used for that purpose.
Call the Motabilty help line to confirm.
My brother did this last year and says that there has been no change.0 -
Their current car only costs them just over £30 a month to insure. It's a 1.25 Fezza. Recent MOT too.
I think she should lease a car via Motability and keep the Fezza for hubby to go to work in, as he works funny hours and can be away for a day or so at a time.
Plus the only extra "cost" involved in having two cars is the extra small amount of fuel she'd pit in the motability car each week.0 -

Another Daily Mail reader no doubt.
Are you aware of the reasons why some people get an allowance to help them get around and the £51 per week can be spent on taxis, specialist vehicles to collect them etc., OR a leased Motabilty vehicle.
Get a grip, stop sniping at things that you know nothing about or better still go and live in the USA.0 -

I don't agree leasing is necessarily the best option. She can use her motability to pay for finance on the car."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Yes my speciality is tax law, which supports motability, without support from the UK electorate. Why support fascism and attacking the will of the people who are the majority and who don't want welfare dictatorship forced upon them?:money:0 -
