  • Hello Jen,

I'm so sorry to hear you will need to stay in hospital for another month.

I've never had a problem charging my phone or laptop when I stayed in hospital (I'e never explicitly asked but I also haven't been told to unplug it either). Perhaps ask a different staff member - maybe the one you asked gave their personal opinion and not the hospital policy. And if it is the hospital rule then perhaps ask to speak to a senior person.

Or, can you borrow a second ipad off anyone, so that you can be using that one whilst the other is away being charged and vice versa? Maybe a bit of a hassle but at least you will have one with you all the time.

In my local hospital there is a TV that can be in each individual room, although there is an expensive charge. I think the radio is free.

I understand that visiting times are restricted on wards, but if you have your own room then surely it can be more flexible. I'm glad it can be when the nice nurses are on duty.

A new hobby sounds a good idea - any thoughts of what kind of hobby? Maybe get creative and make cards or little gifts for christmas?

Wishing you a speedy recovery from this set back and hope you can go home very soon.

Really, don't have any truck with the "not allowed to charge your ipad" mallarcky.

I know there is probably a sign up that says you can't, but if you plug it in at bedtime, and try to just disguise it a bit, I suspect the nursing staff won't notice/bother about it overnight.

My husband was in hospital with an eye infection a few months ago, just when he was supposed to be supervising his office moving to a new building. He COULDN'T be out of touch, so just ignored the notice, & plugged in his iPhone when nurse activity was quiet on the ward.
The regulations are there to stop dodgy old electrical equipment starting fires. I don't think an ipad will be much of a risk.

If you are more honest than we are, then certainly ask to get your iPad charger PAT tested by the hospital technician. All the hospitals I have experience of do it.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

As a change from knitting, have you tried cross stitch? if you are a beginner, get someone to bring you a magazine with a little kit on the cover .

Its a tough one just getting through a prolonged stay so hang on in there you are doing OK. I've quietly plugged things in before just not said anything and its not normally noticed etc. I even have a triple adaptor in my emergency hospital bag.
Dare I mention Christmas cards letters etc as you'll be too busy living a life when you get out to think of these things?
Perhaps try and get an outing off the ward for an hour or so.
    Crochet is normally my thing.
Is there an OT around who can look at any time passing activities for you. They'd then provide you with materials. Maybe the ward would like some hand made decs???

There are also batteries like: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/20000mah-usb-and-laptop-pc-li-polymer-backup-battery-5909 (not used) which would charge the ipad about 3 times.

Jen, sorry to hear about that. If I knew where you were, you'd be getting a certain type of Calendar favoured by my wife for your entertainment, :D

Thanks everyone. Nurses said no charging because they might need the sockets for machines but there's 3 sockets here so I'm going for it.

I can't have a tv in my room as there's just a shared ward tv, I'm in the old building so don't have the cool tv over my bed thing that the new wards have.

My mum brought me my address book and a catalogue to order my cards and stuff so will make a start on that.

Hi Jen have you played angry birds its addictive.

How about a tv dvd player , they are portable and at least you can watch films on it.
  • mylife line when in hospital (my stays can be frequent and up to 6 weeks) is my pc, crochet and mp3 player, dvd player then comes in to play.

I find ita great help for visitorsto bring me in the occasional meal, our local hospital is on a weekly menu andrather bland, so it helps make things a bit more interesting, we use insulated bento boxes ond I havebeen known to have the odd cury from thehospital resterant.
