DVD Recorder - black & white channels

Options
Hi sorry if this is in the wrong place. I have just connected a new dvd recorder to my telly and the channels are black and white when viewed through the dvd recorder so only recording in black and white. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this. I've tried changing several settings but its not making a difference and the user manual doesn't say anything about it.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Are all the leads properly pushed in, if a lead isn't quite in properly at either end you can lose colour.
  • If it's not a loose scart...

Are you using an s-vhs lead, or scart?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks have checked the leads and they seem to be in tight enough. I've connected it with a scart lead. Then the aerial that was into the telly is now into the dvd recorder with another aerial wire from dvd recorder to telly. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks for all the help

I had this problem and I had to phone panasonic (the manufacturers of my telly) and press the av button on tv remote 3 or 4 times to get to the right av channel.

I don't know if that is your problem but hope that helps.

(I was connecting a dvd recorder at the time too)

If you can give me the exact make and model of your TV and DVD and exactly how it is all plugged including which AV sockets you are using I may be able to help!

It may have nothing to do with it, but I had a similar problem with my DVD recorder on my old telly in that the DVD player was outputting NTSC instead of PAL, and my old telly couldn't handle NTSC properly and would only produce a black and white picture. If everything else is tuned in and set up correctly correctly, it might be worth a look to check this setting...?

I already checked that it was on pal. It's a alba rdvd1001 recorder and york telly though don't know what model. Not sure I know what you mean when you ask what av I'm using. I have them connected via scart then the aerial into dvd recorder and aerial from dvd recorder to telly

    Thanks

First of all you need to establish whether it's the output of the DVD that is the problem OR the input of the tv. There are two main reasons you will be getting a black and white picture. One, the output/inputs are set to different systems or there is a fault with the scart lead.

    1) I would try a different scart lead first (the easiest remedy!)

    2) In the DVD set up menu check the 'signal type' output is set to either 'Auto' or 'PAL'.

    3) In the DVD set up menu check what the 'AV output' signal is set to. It could be set to 'RGB', S-Video' or 'Composite (may be called CVBS)' Set this to 'Composite' - although this is not the best quality, it is the most compatible with other signals. You may have to do this by setting RGB or S-video to the 'Off' position.

You may get colour now....if not......

    4) On the tv, establish what the scart is plugged into - AV input 1 or 2.

    5) On the tv set-up menu, check the input signal type on the input you have plugged the scart lead into. Eg if it's AV1 (or Euro 1/Scart 1) check if it is set to 'RGB' on or off, or 'S-video' on or off. If either are on set them to off.

Tell me if you have colour now. If you have, we'll try to improve your picture by experimenting with 'RGB' or 'S-video' - as they will vastly improve the picture quality.

Most likely reason is that the composite video output through the SCART is switched to S-Video. This seperates out the B&W and colour signals. If your telly is only accepting composite inputs then the colour signal is filtered out and you are left with black & white only.
