I have non-wireless modem and need changing?

I have non wireless -modem which came with my virgin media internet. VM would only upgrade my cable modem/router wireless, if I change to 30MB speed free, or pay for the same.
Silly me, I do not know the difference between router and modem? I know argos and other stores sell cable wireless router/modems. If I was to buy one, will I be able to replace my current modem and still use VM?
Thanks

If your computer is connected to an existing 'cable' modem, then all you need is a wireless 'cable router' which plugs into your existing cable modem. It will not replace the cable modem. Only Virgin can supply 'modems' for cable use.
Do not buy a wireless router device from Argos etc that claims to be a modem - it won't work as they will be intended for connecting to phone lines (ADSL), not for cable use.
fwiw, if you look on eBay, there are plenty of people selling brand new Virgin Dlink DIR-615 wireless cable routers for less than 12 quid inc. delivery at the moment. It's a basic wireless router which Virgin was issuing to new customers last year before they brought out their new 'all in one' superhubs etc. Do a search for 'DIR-615'.
Here's just one of many Virgin DIR-615 supplied in plain white cardboard box examples. Cheap as chips.

The VG 1.0 firmware installed on Virgin's DIR-615 may not be very reliable. Provided it is a D2 model, it can be replaced with Dlink's better firmware for the retail D1 model, version 4.11:
