Xbox Live

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, if it's not, could a guide please move it :)

My son (age 13) had an account with Xbox Live, but foolishly he changed his avatar so it had red skin, seemingly a big no-no for Microsoft.

His account has been permanently suspended, and all the items he's bought with microsoft points (about £100 worth), and the 7 months left of his twelve month membership has been lost.

As he is under 18 and therefore not legally able to enter into a contract, is there any way to re-coop either the money he's spent, or have the items transferred to his new account (Microsoft advised opening a new account)?

ah the old 'hes not old enough to have a contract, but you're only bothered when you have it taken off you - before he broke the rules you were more than happy for him to have it and the access associated with it' arguement.

Sorry, but recouping the money, no, transferred to a new account after MS close down the original, no I don't know of a way and can't honestly see why MS should facilitate this. He broke the terms and conditions and therefore forfeited the access and content.

He changed his avatar and was banned for it?

I've just asked my husband and he doesn't understand that bit. Are you sure he wasn't reported for something?

He did say though that everything will be lost now and that there isn't any way to recover it all I'm afraid.

No, I rang them and checked, and they said that was the reason, something to do with red being outside the normal parameters for xbox avatars.

visidigi, yes I know he did wrong, and he's accepted the consequences. However, I feel it's a harsh punishment for something that doesn't affect anyone else.

it involves hex editing on the console
any form of hex editing on the console results in a ban
This Xbox LIVE account has been permanently suspended due to unauthorized modification of your Gamertag, avatar or other profile data.

These modifications may include, but are not limited to:

    • Altering the appearance of your Gamertag or avatar outside of the default parameters

    • Illegitimate gain of achievements or avatar awards

    • Application of watermarks or other special identifiers that were not legitimately granted

    • Unauthorized manipulation of in-game parameters

To help avoid future account suspensions, please review the Xbox LIVE Code of Conduct and the Terms of Use here:

when you have to hack the console data then its not something M$ will take kindly to.

To get a red skin colour he would have had to mod his Xbox, modding is against the Code of Conduct and the Terms of Condition breaking these rules will result in a permanently Banned account (info found on the Xbox.com Forum)

edit: custardy beat me to it :)

he hasnt accepted the consequences as you're here trying to find out how to revert them - he's hacked his xbox, hes broke the rules - its not harsh punishment - and the skin colour of the console may not affect anything else, but hex editing a console is a blanket ban as such behaviour CAN affect everyone he plays again MS cannot remotely confirm the extent of the HEX editing, the system is check for complaincy against fixed rules on the Xbox network - any non standard code, ciao - and rightly so IMO.

Life lesson learned for me I am afraid...

See the difference between those two words?

    Yes he has accepted it.
    I think it's harsh.

Simple really, try reading before spouting crap.

Why has your son hacked his console?

Was it especially to give his avatar red skin (in which case, why?!) or was it originally hacked for other reasons (cheating at games?)

I expect your son will be too embarrassed to admit to you whether he had been cheating, or had planned to do so, but its more likely that he was then that it was just to make his avatar stand out.

As for whether its possible to get the games/points moved across, no its not. This is the penalty for what he did - he loses access to content and also his gamer points, which are a bit of a status thing. If he got these moved across, there would be no real penalty, as as you've seen, he can just open another one.

Hopefully he's learnt his lesson, and will keep the new account clean.

Edit: Do you use the Xbox? If you don't play games on it, it might seem a harsh punishment. If you do, and you've played games where hacking means people can't die, or can see you etc, then you should probably appreciate why the ban is as harsh as it is. It ruins the game, which stops people playing, which stops them buying more games, and therefore Microsoft lose money. Permanently suspending accounts is the only real way to prevent gamers from doing this.

He wanted a red avatar as he's a Liverpool fan.
