What feedback to leave?

Can't decide on this one.

Bought something to sell on, it was pictured and advertised as new and boxed. I paid a little more than I'd originally budgeted because of this. It then arrives not boxed.

I contacted the seller and she told me that it wasn't boxed because it would have cost more to post (it wouldn't have made much difference at all, the item is only lightweight) and anyway she paid more originally for it than the auction went for (actually I don't think this would be the case, prob a couple of pounds at most). She has offered to send me alternative gift wrap packaging, but this would be useless.

What feedback would you leave? Tempted to leave a neutral but wondering if I'm being harsh, the item is still new but not with tags/box as described. It's her attitude that has annoyed me though, no sorry just passing responsibility "sorry to hear you are not happy", not sorry for my mistake, and blaming postal prices etc.

  • I'd push the seller again for the bo - say that's how it was described, that's what you bid & paid for, so that's what you epect.
It's the sellers reponsibility to post the item - they can't change their mind just because they think it'll cost more - they should have considered that when listing.
You might be able to persuade the seller to give you a partial refund.

I wouldn't be leaving feedback until it was properly resolved and I don't think it is.

If she advertises as new and boxed then it should be sent like that even if it cost more to post than she charged you, she is responsible for working out the correct postage cost and sending the advertised item.

Maybe you should be due a refund of the difference in value between a new and boxed item and a new and unboxed item. Or if you can't now sell it on as planned maybe return it for a full refund. I would be thinking along those lines rather than feedback just yet.
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

No she's recycled the packaging so no chance. She has offered me a gift bag instead, but obviously this is no use to me (and in all honesty if I was giving as a gift, I would still want the packaging). She doesn't seem to think she has done anything wrong at all.

The postage was free so I think she has taken the packaging off to save her money and keep more of the auction price.

She still should have considered that. Or at least asked you before she disposed of the package.
In the past when I've sold stuff with gift packging, I've put on my listing that this is optional - some buyers ask not to have the packing others want it.

Oh I agree, she shouldn't have taken it off. It was boxed in the picture, the description described it as such. My judgement is clouded because it hugely affects the price I can sell it for, but even so, it is not as described. And I find it very irritating that she is acting like I am a fussy customer, and she has done nothing wrong because she paid more for it originally.

Would it be better to return it for a full refund? Or will you still be able to sell it on for a decent profit?

Yes you're probably right about not leaving feedback yet.

Fairly sure she won't take a refund - a gift bag is her final offer it appears. Just to make it clear, item weighs about 250g boxed, so the amount she's saved is minimal.

I can still sell on for a profit I think, and that is probably better than forcing a return and paying return recorded postage. Just irritated and it makes me understand why some buyers are so aggressive when you make a mistake - they're used to sellers who won't admit a mistake. I've made a couple recently and apologised/refunded/given a free replacement and my buyers have been very happy with that - now I understand why!!

I would definitely leave poor feedback (neutral, or if you think she has been overtly rude, a neg) even if you decide to keep it.

As you say, this is why some buyers get narked easily.

This is after all how people learn. It's unlawful of her to do this, so maybe - in the interests of fair play - you should be holding her to what she has to do by law even if she's a private seller (SOGA 1979).

From her point of view, she doesn't see it as a big deal. I do feel a little bad as for this sort of item, I can sell for a lot more boxed, so wonder if my seller greed (for want of a better word!) is colouring my judgement a little.

However, I find it strange to sell something as new and boxed, then remove the box to post it - the packaging probably weighed 30g!

If you think about it, you actually bought the box too, since it was advertised as new and boxed, you bought a box and have not been supplied with all the goods you purchased and paid for.

If you can't have the box then you did not get all the product you paid for, and as such you can: open a dispute, or accept what you have and feedback her, or negotiate with the seller to return it for a refund (harder than it should be).

I think if it was me and I knew I could still sell at a profit, I would try for a partial refund, failing that accept the goods but leave neutral feedback.

Ebay just isn't what it use to be sadly, the last 8 purchases we've had we've had complaints about 5 of them. Two didn't work so we returned them after talking to the sellers, for a full refund, one was dirty but since it was cheap and we only needed it once we just didn't give her feedback at all, one was unusable and we had to file a dispute to have a refund sent and the other is still ongoing, described as "Fantastic condition" but so worn and in such poor condition they are unwearable. I hate filing disputes because I dont want ebay to feel like I am a problem customer, but what else can you do when people are lying on their adverts?
