We didnt, but our previous neighbours were very unhappy with the lady we sold to, and complained to us that they didnt like her and we shouldnt have sold our house to her.

We moved partly because they were very interferring people who liked to have an opinion on everthing we did.

Thanks, this is similar to where we are.

Is this thread going along the lines of:

"An Asian family moved into our street and nobody warned us."

    No it isn't.

Correct. And it's nothing to do with race (as far as I know!), it's to do with them having kids.

I'm not sure in the slightest what the neighbours expect from me as a seller. I don't feel like we need to consult with them at all, but was interested to hear other opinions.

    Thanks as ever.
Offer to sell it to your neighbours for exactly the same price - contracts to be exchanged in 7 days and current buyer's legal expenses to be settled.

If I had neighbours that I thought might take offence to any minority group moving in, I think I'd warn prospective purchasers.

Maybe you should've forewarned the buyers not the neighbours?

Many many years ago, maybe 30/40ish, my PIL sold their home in pposh (comparatively) Hornchurch, Essex. An Asian man knocked on his door and requested a viewing. FIL apologised but told him he couldn't sell to him as it would affect house prices in the area and that wasn't fair on the neighbours.

Of course it is completely inconceivable now, but then it seems that the cfolour of a person's skin actually did affect house prices!

Personally I'm just glad that our society has left that behind us. So no, I don't think anyone should even consider asking the neighbours if they would have an objection to the colour of skin in cases of selling, in fact, it would surely be illegal?
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

We are entitled to our opinions, but not to expose them or inflict them on our neighbours. We certainly can't discriminate.

In a small close or cul de sac, there is a neighbourly feel, and some might get quite territorial " it's our cul de sac".

It is best to let people know, strangers will be looking around, and Hyacinth will want to put up new nets for privacy and to hide behind while peeking out.;)

Some might be friends you will keep, so cash might not be the only reason to sell to any person.

But like it or not most will discriminate a little whether it's ethnicity, the little brat, the polite sneer at your hard work on the new deck, or some random thing you bond on.

And I bet no one says "they offered the price and can buy it, deal done",without adding another factor eg " good they were a nice couple" or " god help the neighbours"

    That's people for you.
Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.

  • my parents tried to sell their house a few years back, neighbours saw the viewer getting out the car, didnt like the look of him, in the time the viewing took they all stood outside, staring at the guy, at least half a dozen of them

thoroughly ashamed to have heard such a thing would happen

So why did you tell them where you'd moved to?
