MOT emissions test blew the turbo

    If the turbo failed then that is because you have taken absolutely no notice of what is in the owners manual about leaving the engine idling for a minute or so when you've been on a journey to allow the turbo to cool so it was already virtually dead before it went in for the test and the test was the final straw - it would have happened in the not too distant future anyway.

    Seriously, I'd be surprised if a 110bhp diesel Mondeo would have such a stipulation in the handbook, diesels don't produce the heat levels in turbos like pertrol cars do and then that's more of an issue with higher output petrol turbo's. To the OP, it's unfortunate but 93k out of a turbo isn't too bad, admittedly it's nothing to shout about though.

    This, every garage has this sign up in the MOT area.

    The turbo was likely due to go anyway, possibly due to poor maintenance/driving or possibly just due to age/luck/something else failing.

    I will check the handbook when I get the back back out of interest but I agree. This isn't exactly a 'high performance' car that needs a turbo timer or the like. Given the number of cars with turbos these days (both petrol and diesel) if this was the case then there would be a lot more failures.

    I think it was just a case of the turbo failing due to age more than anything else. Thinking about it I had noticed that it had occasionally 'hesitated' when accelerating or when the cruise was trying to maintain the speed and there had been puffs of greyish smoke from a cold start which all points to the turbo not being as healthy as it should be.

    EVERY SINGLE TURBOCHARGER WHETHER PETROL OR DIESEL NEEDS TO DO THIS. It has nothing to do with whatever the output of the turbo is and everything to do with the fact it is bolted to a red hot inlet manifold as that generated the heat, not the turbo. If there isn't oil circulating it kills the bearings. Most turbos die from the bearings packing in long before the blades have worn.

    Have you ever been under the bonnet of a car? Bolted to a "red hot inlet manifold"
    Maybe you need to look at one, where the turbo is stuck before the inter cooler, then the air pipe runs into the inlet manifold.
    Mine has run happily for 14 years so far.

    Slight typo there - you meant bolted to the exhaust manifold surely!

    I had a diesel Cavalier years ago and i remember being worried watching them rev it at the Mot, he told he i needed to drive it harder, especially before a test, he told me to go for a drive down the motorway and really put my foot down.

    Sorry, I meant exhaust manifold. Please excuse me for having the cheek to post after I'd been up 48hrs straight....

    As a qualified mechanic, I am aware of how a turbo is hooked up, thankyou very much.
