Well good and bad news - sold my first item EVER on ebay!! :-)
However, it only sold for 99p (starting price) and the seller has paid this plus postage (so 2.19 total) but 27p has been deducted in fees - I thought it was only 10% of the selling price so thought they would only take 10p! Can anyone help me out? Not sure I want to sell much more if they are going to take a third!

I think the 27p will have been paypal fees. Did your buyer pay you with paypal?

Good news and bad news. Thats your Paypal fees - 20p + 3.4% of whatever they pay you (so including the postage!).

Bad news is ebay will also bill you 10% of the Final Value of your item at the end of the month (another 10p).

Its one of the unfortunate sides of selling on ebay if your item ends for 99p your looking at practically nothing for your time and effort (well 60p). Although lots of sales will mean something at the end.

    Thanks for replying

Yes they did - does that mean paypal take 27p and ebay will also take 10p?? If so, why does anyone bother with 99p start - do people really make enough money off it?

Feeling like a bit of a numpty now - I thought total fees would be 10p :o

Thanks for explaining that - I guess not so bad for stuff I've listed this weekend with a higher start price. Silly me for not checking! :o

Does anyone know how much cash you get if you take the $5 cashout.
    Rosie

As far as i remember i got £3.89 or something like that for $5 but it changes as per exchange rate. If you are going for the cash option it is better value to go for a higher amount - $25 or $50 if you can!

Thats not the right fee - it should only be 10p then your paypal fee as well. Its not great when items sell for 99p :( I usually add a little to my postage for 99p items - for example i sold something the other day for 99p, i charged £2.50 for postage the postage cost was £1.96, ebay fee was 10p, paypal fee was 32p so i ended up with £1.11 profit rather than 57p. I usually only add maybe 40 or 50p though otherwise you get negative feedback for postage costs :(

Yes be careful, people will give you neutral feedback for even 50p overcharge! They will definitely give you less than full stars and this can be a big effect. Some buyers on there seem to think it should be the cost of the stamp only - not even allowing for packaging. Let alone the fact that you pay 3.6% to receive their postage payment as well!
