what you needed was a blanking primer such as zinsser bin primer follwed by a couple of undercoats and then a coat of gloss
Thanks for that. I'll give it a go when I start again.
• We have had a similar experience to other members after using Dulux Trade High Gloss White paint (solvent based). The inside of our 4 bed-roomed house was painted early 2011 and less than 6 months later the brilliant white has turned a nasty shade of yellow. Contacted Dulux to discuss matters further and a very helpful Customer Assistant explained that recent EU legislation had necessitated a change in the % Volatile Organic Compounds (currently VOC’s must be within range of 25-50%) for ecological/environmental reasons. She elaborated by admitting that this change had compromised the formulation of solvent-based white gloss paint in terms of its ability to stay white. The other factor that seems to accelerate the yellowing process is the absence of natural light. That’s the bad news!!

The good news is that Dulux seem more than willing to compensate customers for this quality defect. We are currently in the negotiation phase but early signs are promising. They are prepared to supply different paint (EcoSure Gloss or Quick Dry Gloss – both of which are water based ) free of charge and also reimburse our builder/decorators total cost of labour to re-do the entire job (likely to be in excess of £1,000).

If you are in a similar situation having used a solvent-based Dulux gloss white paint, suggest that you e-mail Dulux at the following address: TrimTechnicalAdvice@akzonobel.com (attn. of Ms Jo Gumbs) or ring Customer Services for advice on 08444.817.817.1
