My house was painted last year. I have several items on the windowsills in the house, and when I lift them to clean them, the footprint of the objects are in yellow

It looks like I'll have to keep the things in the same places for ever.

Also, in environments with limited or no daylight, and higher temperatures the paints are prone to yellowing even faster.

Unfortunately, this discolouration is a challenge faced by all manufacturers and brands with solvent-based paints.

Yes, lack of light accelerates the proces of yellowing. Not all oil based paints yellow so easily. I believe Sikkens Satura Plus is very resistant, and someone said International cupboard paint is too. I think it is because they do not contain linseed oil, unlike normal gloss.

I posted the same query on MSE only days ago as my Dulux gloss also went yellow. A parallel problem was reported regarding Crown paints - they changed the formula and the paint stank.

Have also found that Dulux gloss bought in late 2010 yellows quickly. We've been redecorating the house room by room since then. I've now stopped re-coating gloss-work just for the sake of it as the rooms done a year ago look a LOT older/yellower than rooms I know haven't been painted since at least the owners before last - 2005 or earlier.

    That was emulsion not gloss.

Makes me laugh so called eco products so you have to use it more often to get a decent finish so its counter productive

Following changes in Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) legislation, paint manufacturers have been required to reduce the amount of solvent in traditional trim products.

As part of this process, many solvent-based coatings were reformulated to have a higher 'solids' content.

While these are better for the environment, the new formulations can discolour more quickly.
This results in greater yellowing appearing on the paint surface in all conditions.
Also, in environments with limited or no daylight, and higher temperatures the paints are prone to yellowing even faster.

Unfortunately, this discolouration is a challenge faced by all manufacturers and brands with solvent-based paints.

I got a shock today when I looked at a piece of skirting board in my kitchen that I glossesd two months ago. The other bit was done with Sikkens Satura Plus. The Dulux gloss board is yellow. Two months! :( It gets plenty of light. Pathetic.

  • i have the exact same problem with the window sills and the skirting boards. I used Dulux gloss.

I'm thinking of complaining actually given that this is a common problem. I can see no excuse for yellowing occuring under ornaments on a window sill...
