santander student account

I applied and got the santander student account i've deposited 500 pounds into my account to activate the overdraft facility but today i've been told that i can't have one. Why would they accept me for a student account. I stated on the application i wanted an overdraft why accept me and open the account if i didn't pass.

  • Go into a branch and ask to appeal the decision

Close the account and open one with a decent bank - you'll never get any sense out of Santander.
    I find smile pretty good
  • Does anyone have advice on what to do next, the overdraft was the only reason i applied for the account. They accepted me for the account and on the application it asked if i wanted an overdraft i put yes. They opened the account and yet refused the overdraft. I thought once i'd been accepted santander was a guaranteed overdraft for students. I've got a message from santander saying i hadn't got enough points on the system but if i run my account well they will consider my request again in 4 months time.
  • bump! anyone ?
  • When exactly did you depsoit the £500 into the student account? if it was recently and it's a new account, then go into a branch and ask for the decision to be appealed. Ask the banking advisor to note on the electronic appeals form that the £500 was credited on X day, qualifying you for the £1,000 1st year OD limit. Unless there's a very specific reason for not doing it, I've never before had one refused after an appeal once the £500 was credited.

    Hope that helps :)

Yes its a new account and the 500 pounds was deposited on the 25th october. Can i appeal over the phone to the lending department or whatever its called.

what specific reason could that be ? i know thats a silly question to ask but if you mean do i have deafults or a ccj then no i just don't have alot of history i do have a credit card with a low limit and a bank account without an overdraft.

Well, if you have an active student account elsewhere (and this shows on your credit file), then this will likely show and - from my understanding - you're only supposed to have 1 active student account as THIS is the account where your bursary/student loan is to be paid into (certainly as far as Santander are concerned). That's a key part of the T's and C's. Or any CIFAS (fraud) showing on your file will kabosh any application (not saying you have, just stating it as an example). ;)

And with no disrepect to the telephone team, I'd still recommend you go into a branch and ask them to appeal the decision and note on the electronic appeals form that the £500 was credited on X day.

    Good luck. :)

Thanks for the answer, the other account is a normal bank account this is my only student account. I chose santander because they are the only ones that allow Open university applicants to apply. so thats why i'd like to get this pushed through.

well what a mess i went into a branch to appeal they told me that i could do this but since santander wasn't letting me have the overdraft there was nothing to appeal she said it sounded silly even from her viewpoint. She also said i would only have 250 pounds and it would increase each term to 1000. I asked if this was common and she said yes people are always appealing loans and credit cards. eventually she took my details and said that she would send it off tomorrow when her manager was in. I asked would i be emailed or a letter sent she replied no. she did take my mobile number and said she would phone once she got something back. She did try to talk to someone from another branch to help but the person wasn't in.

she apologised as she knew that the process wasn't very professional after this afternoon i'm not holding my breath.

I have got a copy of the appeal if this is turned down is that the end of it or can i make a further appeal or make a complaint. I don't have any bad things on my credit file just a lack of credit.
