Unlocking an Iphone 3GS from O2 to use with Vodaphone

Hi, I am currently having major problems with my O2 signal, I have made them aware of this and they make their excuses but don't seem to solve the problem.

My main question is how would I go about getting my Iphone unlocked from O2 so that I could use an existing Vodaphone SIM of my husbands? I'm fed up of not being able to use my phone when I need it so my intention is to dump the O2 SIM in the draw until a time when I can cancel the contract and use Vodaphone in the mean time.

I have had phones easily unlocked by independent phone shops in the past but from reading on the internet the Iphones sound a bit more complicated - is this the case?
