Help... paid £290 for an item but it's not covered by Ebay

Hi everyone, I think I need some advice here

On the 20th October I bought an argos gift voucher on eBay, for £290. The buyer had 100% positive feedback and I thought I'd be protected because buyer protection, paypal, blah blah

I've not heard anything from them since, and my worst fears are confirmed when I saw they've just received a negative feedback for no receipt/ no communication.

So I tried to open an ebay dispute and it wouldn't let me! Apparently it falls outside the ebay buyer protection, certain categories aren't covered :-(

What can I do to try get my money back? I paid by paypal, which was linked to my debit card.

I tried to open a paypal claim but i'm not sure if it'll get anywhere, apparently 'items equivalent to cash' are exempt as well

It was listed under:
Events Tickets > Gift Vouchers & Coupons > Other Gift Vouchers & Coupons

I feel foolish not checking everything through but I should just concentrate on how i can get my money back, if at all.

Help much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

  • If your debit card is a visa and was used to fund the transaction you can do a charge back through your bank.

    pheww that's some hope left!
It's a Visa Debit, what do I have to show the bank to get a chargeback?
  • Ive never done one myself, yout best bet is to go into the bank and ask them about doing a charge back for not recieving the item or phone their customer services and see if they can advise you. Good luck.

I wouldn't hold out much hope. Most banks consider paypal as a third party payment option - ie they have paid paypal, what you do with that money is then not of their concern. But if you are lucky and have a helpful bank, it may work.
  • My ex bank, the one account were so unhelpful when it came to PayPal, it was unbelievable, thank the lord I'm not with them any more!!!

It could be that you'll have to go down the small claims route.
They've sold an awful lot of high value items almost £4k in the last 14 days.
I would be very suspicious of a newish ebayer listing that sort of value when they only have a handful of feedback.
I do hope that you're able to get your money back somehow.
  • It wasn't item 170713814004 was it, because if it was you really have landed yourself in the sh*t!
Mind you, if it was the item I thought it was, I could see why you trusted him, £105 iPod arrived in tact, just goes to show, anyone can be caught out!
  • Dont waste any more time waiting. Contact your local police as it is theft, at least you are then doing something positive. I would also contact your bank for a chargeback, even if it is from paypal. Local Trading standards might be another good source of action and sound advice. Best of luck. Anything like that should be collection in person and payment only then.
