Gas Meter smell

My daughter has moved into a house with the meter under the stairs when you open the door under the stairs you can smell gas. When the meter reader came she asked about it and he said you can always smell gas from a meter. It is a good storage place but does not like to put anything it. Is it possible to have the meter move to outside and will she have to pay for this. Also if there is a gas leek will it cost her.

I had a small gas leak around my meter. It's outside and I could smell it when I opened the window. I reported it to Scottish Gas and I had nothing to pay for it to be fixed. I don't know if it would cost her to move it outside though.

If your daughter is concerned, advise her to call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800111999 asap to have someone check it. An engineer will inspect it and repair it for free. They usually come out within an hour, depending on the work load.

To have the meter moved outside is a chargable job. The work is usually done by Fulcrum on behalf of the local gas board. If you contact your supplier they should be able to give you a phone number.

They don't like moving meters inside because it makes it harder for meter readers to gain access!
  • I would recommend contacting the emergency number. Just to be safe. Unlike what the meter reader said, not all meters smell, and normaly it means that there is a small leak. I had the same problem when i first moved into my house, the Regulator on the meter was faulty, caled the emergency number and Transco or whatever they are caled now, were out within the hour.

There should not be a leak, there should not be a smell of gas.

The meter reader in all likelyhood was a monkey trained to read a dial and not a corgi registered engineer.

Call the gas supplier they will send an engineer out whowill rectify the problem. Most likely as malcindebt said, leaky reg.
