Hi there, it's very easy to sell on Amazon. I've sold all my Uni books and made about 3/4 of the cost back. They do take a percentage though in admin so check it out and the standard charge for all postage is about 2.75 for books so beware if you sell a heavy book.
  • I haven't had time to read through all the posts so not sure if this is mentioned or not. You can swap unwanted books on a website called read it swap it.http://www.readitswapit.co.uk You only pay for the postage and although it means you are receiving something back into your home when you get rid of something - at least it will be something you want!! :j
  • I put all my old books (especially paperbacks) on https://www.greenmetropolis.co, I get £3 for each sold, can take it off at any time if I 'do' a car boot or get fed up wih waiting for it to sell.
They pay £3 for each book sold and donate 5p (I think) per book to charity for planting new trees (GREENmetropolis, get it?)
    Buyng books costs £3.75.

I have found it very useful - give it a try.
  • Thanks to whoever said about greenmetropolis, I've just listed about 5 books that I know I'll never read again!
But does anyone know if there's any hidden charges? Like on ebay its about 30p to list something, and then paypal charge a silly amount too... is there anything like that for greenmetropolis?

I'm just getting into ebay, it's great selling old rubbish! I'm amazed at what people will buy, I'm currently watching a Harrods carrier bag go for 99p!I used to work near harrods, if only I'd of known!

A good tip too...not particually helpful if you're trying to get rid of stuff, but next time you go to the cinema, pick up a load of film posters. They seem to go for about £3 each. Free money!

Thanks for the tips on free removal of goods/furniture on freecycle. My Nan has just had to go in to a home and she has a lot of large pieces that we thought would end up going to the tip otherwise.

Get them to an auction house. Even if they don't seem worth anything to you, you may find that landlords will purchase them for furnished accomodation.

Furnished accomodation is one of the best legal tax avoidance schemes there is for landlords. They can deduct 10% of the net rent (excluding council tax, utilities etc) for wear and tear on furniture and effects. This excludes repairs to the property. So, they try to furnish the place as cheaply as poss and the furniture actually earns them several times what it's worth!

I will never again let a house or flat unfurnished when I see what this allowance does to by tax bill :D. Any furniture that is surplus to our requirements tends to go into our rented places, replacing items that have had it or are not as good as the items we are putting in there.

Can someone tell me what friday ad is please.
I really need to de-clutter but I keep thinking how can I get rid of stuff my kids or my late husband bought, even though some of the stuff hasn't been out of the boxes they were put in on previous moves. Any ideas for getting over the guilt would be appreciated

Friday-Ad [www.friday-ad.co.uk]is a website and free paper ( the kind you pick up in a supermarket) where you can advertise anything very cheaply or FREE. I recommend experimenting with your advert as you can get a free advert with a photo for a week on line and in your local free paper. At present I am selling a car with a free photo ad...there is a limit on the number of words you can use and a free ad is basic.

I have loads of books and now must make room for others. I have joined 2 websites to this end.

1 http://www.bookcrossing.com A community which leaves books, appropriately labelled for others to find and register, I can track where my books go.

I wanted to release some books of my own into the wild this week starting with a bench in the local shopping centre. I was looking forward to seeing where in the country or world the books would end up. I think it's a wonderful idea, but had trouble finding labels, which you need to register the books/be an effective BookCrosser? The labels on the book crossing website seem quite pricey ...$19.95 for 25 sticky labels seems very steep, especially when all you want to do is give something away.

and dd2's baby stuff which I just can't bear to part with even though she's now 4 and at the age of 40+ I shan't be having any further need for it.
i know how you feel but you have to let go or else everything piles up my girls are now 3 and 5 yr old and what i do is give any good clothes to a friend or charity shop and the toys go to my local hospital the girls love going along and giving it all to the childrens ward and it brings a lump to your throat when you see a very sick child playing with the toys you've given, we dont have loads of money to give to charity so this is our way of giving and the girls are learning to give what they can to others who need it which is really nice plus they help choose what we give and dont mind parting with it this way, last night we took four bags and on the way home the littlest of them said "orrr,we'vd still got our mermaids at home havent we!" and the eldest said she'd be telling her friends at school to go to the hospital with toys!
hope you might do this and enjoy!
i have also sold many bigger things on loot including my dishwasher and pram.

Scanning is certainly an excellent idea to free up space. You might be able to avoid it altogether - and save some paper too - by seeing if your bank, utilities companies etc. can send electronic versions of your bills - instead of paper ones. I know for a fact that BT can do this as I get my bills that way. You just need to set up a little filing system on the computer and move the bills into it when they come by email. You will need to think about making a back-up every now and then (eg burn to CD).

Hi thanks for this, yes i have set up as much as i can through the internet so avoiding the paper mountains. My only problem is the lack of adecent backup programme at the mo so when I do back up it is the laboriuous drag and drop of all folders onto multiple discs. It is my next IT project to sort this out more economically form a time perspective. Anyone know of any good but not to expensive incremental back up programmes.
