We have been trying to sort out our "junk" and I admit I have been a hoarder ("it may be useful someday" type).

The only thing is I have never done a car boot sale before, I have been to a few, but don't "Know the system" like some boot-veterans. I don't have the time for e-baying but would like to make a few quid if posssible.

I might just have to try a 'boot sale, as long as I make the £10 fee for a pitch or whatever it costs.

  • Rubix_76 a good Car boot seller is one that displays everything well and clearly on the table etc and also make sure you have plenty of chage.

We usually have about £50 in change to be sure you have enough change few notes mainly pound coins and less.

You will be amazed what you will sell.

    Good luck
  • Hey,

Wandering if anyone can help me declutter and make some money aswell. I've got plenty of items ranging from marble dress top drawer to hundreds of 12" Vinyles from 60s, 70s and 80s music. Im not sure if some of these could possibly be better sold at auction. Any tips as to how to sell these items and were. And also if there are any known places in or around Milton Keynes.

    Thanks,

    Much appreciated.;)
  • we are expecting the builders in, sometime in the near future to totally re-roof, which means moving, from the attic, both my son and all his worldly possessions into the a small sitting room for the duration plus decamping all my treasures, ( or as my OH calls it, probably more acurately, 'JUNK!' ) I need to get stuck in as I know if i leave it to him he'll blitz it and everthing wil go to the tip. So having been inspired by this thread I'm going to spend a short time each day dealing with something.
My main blocks are fabric and crafty stuff, which I will use sometime in the future, honest. and dd2's baby stuff which I just can't bear to part with even though she's now 4 and at the age of 40+ I shan't be having any further need for it. (Is this emotional attachment to 'stuff' a purely female thing or do blokes do it too?)

The main danger is if I store everything at MILs I'll end up putting it all back into the larger storage areas created by the the builders and have room for more !!!!!
  • If you've got books to sell and want to be green as well, try www.greenmetropolis.comwhere you get about £3 per paperback and 5p of your sale goes to the Woodland Trust.

Thank you so much Caroline! I'm saving to take my son to my brother's wedding in Australia in early 2009, so I'm clearing my bookshelves to sell on Green Metropolis - all the profits will go into my son's 'Oz Fund' moneybox!

I have so many books, I might even manage to get enough for his ticket!

but my main saviour is my scanner as I have not fully got over my hoarding instinct so I have been scanning things I am unsure about getting rid of.
........Just got a log burning stove and as a result reducing my heating costs and will look forward to seeing a reduction compared to last years heating bills (all scanned rtaher than keeping paper files)

Scanning is certainly an excellent idea to free up space. You might be able to avoid it altogether - and save some paper too - by seeing if your bank, utilities companies etc. can send electronic versions of your bills - instead of paper ones. I know for a fact that BT can do this as I get my bills that way. You just need to set up a little filing system on the computer and move the bills into it when they come by email. You will need to think about making a back-up every now and then (eg burn to CD).

I've sold books and electrical items (MP3 players and dictaphones) on Amazon before.

I'm not sure if it still applies, given the change in postal costs, but Amazon failed to account for the P&P sufficiently to cover the costs of posting a large (and heavy) academic textbook. For books, Amazon calculates the P&P, charging this to the buyer and paying it to the seller. As such, I was slightly out of pocket on the P&P.

I got caught out by this too. Its put me off selling textbooks through them. Still selling dvds, cd's and paperbacks through them though and getting more on Amazon than I would on ebay.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

Don't forget you can charge more than the "recommended by amozon" price.

No kidding I saw a book that wasn't worth more than £20 and it was on sale in the Amazon Marketplace for over £120 !!! I think it was being shipped from the USA though, but even still !!

This would always allow for any P&P shortfall, I suppose you just may need to do your homework by weighing and (now of course) measuring your parcell or Jiffy bag before you put on the website, and adding a little more to the price :o

  • I am having a New Year clear out - mainly because finally became sick of not being able to use two rooms of the house as so full of junk!

Stuff that is pretty worthless (old clothes/very cheap goods) are either being binned or charity shopped. Tend to send all my unwanted clothes to charity shops as the amount you get back for them (if anything at all) at boot sales etc makes it a waste of time.

Have already had a few purges of my stuffed toy collection and now only have really nice ones left. Not sure of the best way to make money on these yet!!

CDs, computer games, DVDs and books all seem to do well on Amazon, Ebay and other such sites. DON'T take these to bootsales as people will only pay rock bottom prices (e.g. 50p a book/couple of quid for a game). On the sites you can often almost get the price of new.

Thanks for the tips on free removal of goods/furniture on freecycle. My Nan has just had to go in to a home and she has a lot of large pieces that we thought would end up going to the tip otherwise.

Wish me luck tackling the mountain of "junk" tonight!!
  • Go for it islandman, I did this some years ago and it worked well.
Can someone tell me what friday ad is please.
I really need to de-clutter but I keep thinking how can I get rid of stuff my kids or my late husband bought, even though some of the stuff hasn't been out of the boxes they were put in on previous moves. Any ideas for getting over the guilt would be appreciated
