New five pound coin: scam or what?

The postman brought me an intriguing invitation this morning. I have been invited to buy the new five pound coin, for just five pounds. Even the postage is free! The invitation makes it clear that this coin is being made by the Royal Mint and states that it will shortly "enter circulation", although it warns me that I am unlikely to find the coin in my change. However, it does not state that the coin will be legal tender, and the address given is a PO Box in Watford.

Is this a matter for Trading Standards, or even the police?

Its a matter of common sense surely..........
If you are daft enough to send £5.00 to a P.O.Box address in Watford I am sure some scammer will be delighted.
Think about it.....a £5.00 legal tender coin posted to you free (postage cost to them about 70p plus a jiffy bag at 40p) that equals £6.10 which they are going to charge you £5.00 for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw one of these last weekend (the form that is not a £5 coin!). Seemed like a genuine offer although it was limited to one per person. However, this website would seem to have the lowdown...

NB: It is London Mint, not Royal Mint (a bit confusing!!)

edit: Seems like they do this a lot..

The Royal Mint don't just make UK money, they produce notes and coins for a number of other countries, particularly small island countries.
Bet this £5 coin is for somewhere like Tristan Da Cunha, where 5 of their pounds are worth a lot less than 5 of ours.

OK, this definitely stated that it was Royal Mint.

Anyway, I cannot believe that anyone would 'eat' the postage and sell me a genuine five pound coin for five pounds. So what should I do about reporting them?

Coins are no longer worth their face value and therefore in theory it may not be a loss for them to sell them at face value including P&P

I certainly have seen other commemorative notes/ coins being sold at face value but then it was to a very limited distribution and not the general population.... unfortunately I did miss the opportunity last time as I was offered a special £50 note for £50 inc P&P and at the same time saw them successfully being sold for over £300 through collectors websites but when I requested one they had sold out.

  • We also had this invitation - and we had thought about getting one for our son.

I have just checked the return address, and it's the Royal Mint in Pontyclun (i.e. the actual Royal Mint - it's just up the road from us).

We don't need to send any money at the moment either, just register an interest.

    HTH
