home insurance claim

Options
hi, im looking for a little advise, ive had various home insurances for years and never claimed, ive now put a claim in and its a nightmare.

I genuinely dropped my macbook laptop, not a lot of damage but could not get a local repair done so contacted my insurance who's underwriters are legal and general. I have went through lots of questions etc but they are requesting a receipt for the item which is now 5 years old ! the item was a gift and i do not have a receipt nor can i get proof of purchase. the item was between 1200 and 1500 when bought, i have original box, cables and even manual but they are insistant on a receipt. I have sent them photographic evidence of the damage etc, can they knock my claim back if i cant provide receipt ?

i also had old for new insurance and a freind told me even if the item was second hand they would need to cover it. the annoying thing is this ite is prob easilly repaired and its not as if im saying it was stolen i still have the item ?

can anyone advise please ?

If you still have the item it seems very odd that they would be so insistent about wanting the receipt.

I think you may need to make a complaint, say that you believe they are being unfair as you have the item. The FOS would likely say that you have enough to prove ownership.

I notice you say that it will be repairable and if that is the case, then they will only repair it not replace it.

Ask them why they need the receipt. As Somalt says, such a request is usually to prove ownership in the case of say loss or theft. I can't see why its needed in your circumstances.
  • to be honest because its a high value item they really are not being helpfull at all, it was like police grilling, had to go over incident 3 times now ive had to write it down statement of loss. the claim letter said they were requesting receipt as well as the telephone claim. bit of a joke to be honest i have the item the box etc and as i posted above it wouldnt matter if it was a second hand item as i have new for old cover, i dont even kno entent of damage but machine is still working so cant be too bad. ive returned statement with photos and basically told them i dont have receipt so if they persist i just want to make sure i dont need one ! cheers
