One thing with water bowls is not to put them too near the cat's food. It is quite instinctive for us humans to do this, have it all in the same place, but cats don't associate food with water.

I have 3 bowls dotted around the house and another outside during the day when my cats are out, and all five of my cats drink quite well.

Other things to consider are having ceramic and not plastic water bowls (the plastic can deteriorate over time) and also changing the water regularly - I put fresh water down 2 or 3 times a day, even if the bowls are not empty.

he he my little puss guinness (RIP) loved all kind of water- she had a water fountain but still shouted to have the tap put on and used to steal my water from our cups :-) oh and from the toilet (had to stop using toilet blocks)

I just make sure the toilet lid is shut at all times. I love my cats, but not really enough to want them splashing about in my loo ( which is something my Bengals would do, if given the opportunity) :rotfl:
  • 2 of mine will sit by the tap waiting for it to be turned on, and they will have fresh water in their bowls a few times a day....funny cats, will just sit there and wait for me to change it! and as daft as I am will do it too lol.

Murphy kitten loves water, gets in the bath as soon as the shower is turned off, he'll play in there for ages, also last night I filled the sink with warm water to wash my face and he was in there before me!

i've also heard that cats dont like it when their whiskers touch water, so maybe the flatter the bowl the bigger?

i have a cat who patiently sits in the tub twice a day until i plug the tub, and run about a cup or two of water in.

once in the morning when i get up, and then once at night before i go to bed.

the other cat sits in the tub and scratches at it, but i dont thinks she knows WHY she is in the tub, just following the example of the other one!

as for waterbowls, surprisingly enough my two LOVE the dog's road refresher, and the girl gets really anxious when it goes away, so much i had to buy the cats one just for themselves!

I have a water fountain and my old cat used to drink from it - and only it.

My current 2 both use it in summer - I think as it helps keep the water cool .... however, I usually find them drinking out of the dogs bowls (kitchen and bathroom) and they seem to prefer this. Probably as Friday says in that it's well away from their food.

I've unplugged the fountain for the winter (they never use it then) - unfortunately it's not an option to have in the bathroom or kitchen as there's no spare plug.

By all means try the bottle thing but I'm not convinced it'll work as it won't drip all the time which seems to be what they're after - some cats are extremely fussy about where they'll drink, I know one of my pals has to leave the bath tap on a constant drip as it's the only place on of hers will drink from.

They may also like the dead mouse flavoured water, check your tank for dead rodents.

I bought my dog this one a few weeks back:

I bought it mainly because he's quite ill and I figured the addition of filters in the water would be a bit healthier for him. As it turns out I was amazed at just how much crap the filters do take out of the water. It's a great little dish, not too big and silent running.
  • Cats dont hunt for water where they hunt for food. Therefore if your water bowl is close to the food bowls they will look elsewhere - taps, cups etc.

Try different size bowls in different locations.

I never knew that the water should be away from the food so have moved the bowls and will see if that helps make them drink more from the right places. My son found a very large hamster type water bottle that holds 1.5 litres on a stand that can be hired and lowered for different size DOGS. He has bought it and will bring it down next week to try. IF they like it i will get a couple and place them round the house.
