drinking water from bathroom taps

can anyone tell me why my two kittens refuse to drink from their water bowl but sit on the bathroom sink and drink the drips from the tap, and what the hell i can do to stop them.. i really think i could do with a water bottle like they have in hamster cages, can you get them big enough to hold enough water for cats?

Cats often like to drink from the most unlikely sources: dirty puddles, dripping taps etc. Some breeds of cat, like my Bengals, love water and will happily play for hours in the kitchen/bathroom sinks and bath if allowed :D. As for falling in the pond? They don't bat an eyelid :rotfl:

I don't really discourage cats from drinking water wherever they find it, as they are notorious for being programmed to not drink enough, which is why many cat nutritionists encourage the feeding of wet food as well as or instead of dry.

But if you are not enamoured of your cats displaying this behaviour, I would suggest one or both of the following:

    1. Get your taps fixed so they don't drip ;)

    2. You can buy water fountains for cats which many prefer. The flowing water attracts them and they therefore drink more. You do need to have a place near(ish) to a mains plug, though, to site it.

    Hope that helps!

Hi i dont necessarily want to stop them as i know it is important for them to drink, just thought if that was what they liked then maybe a bottle would benefit as they seem to like it.

unfortunately it is not a simple job to fix the leak, my dearest son agreed to change the washer as i had a leak he managed to round the screws so the only way to now fix it is to have the whole bl***y thing drilled out and fit a new tap. As i am in the process of having the bathroom renevated and a new suite fitted (when the plastering is finished) i am not enamoured to change the tap now. Could nt shout he was trying to be helpful but it would have been of benefit if he hadnt tried to do it when he had had a drink or two. kids dont you love them.:D
anyway back to my babies, wanted to stop them more so they werent used to drinking from there and when the new taps are fitted cant find their drinkies.

Hard to imagine they have been here a week tomorrow seems like thay have always been part of the family.

Our baby loves sitting in the bathroom sink playing and licking the running water from the tap and loves sitting by kitchen sink and cries til we put on!

2 of mine do this, 2 don't. Peaches is obsessed by taps and water, she sits at the end of the bath when I start running it and doesn't get out till the water touches her paws then she sits on the edge while I'm in the bath, catching and eating the bubbles!

They do large water bottles for rabbits, maybe one of those would work?

  • you can get cat water fountains, some cats just like running water. When I go to the loo, the cat follows me in and sits in the sink licking the spout until I turn it on. Sometimes I turn it on really quick and make her jump a mile :D

I've never successfully had the cats drink from a water bowl even in the height of summer when I promise I put one down.
