Early Termination of Virgin bundle

Hi ,

12 months back Me & My friend have taken the Virgin connection(TV+Phone+Internet) with 18 months contract under my friends name. 6 months back he travelled to abroad, so we changed the bank details under my name but still contract is with my friend's name.My friend is not going to come back to UK. Now i am planning to go to abroad and want to cancel the VM connection.

1) What are the cancellation charges if i cancel in a proper way?
2) What will happen if i cancel the Direct debit with out informing them?
and i want to return their equipment(Router and TV Box).

Thanks
Rayudu

You can only find out by calling them. I'd expect them to want all the remaining months paying in full. If you just cancel the DD they'll eventually pass it on to debt collectors but if you've both left the UK they'll have some trouble finding anybody to pay the debt I imagine.

Unless you know the password they probably won't even talk to you.

The ETC will depend on the package, it will be a monthly fee x the months remaining on the minimum term. On the TV subscription, it will be the full amount, possibly less on the phone and broadband-you'd need to check with VM. If you cancel your DD, the debt will eventually be sold onto a DCA, a default recorded and your friend's credit record trashed for 6 years.
If you don't return the equipment, he will be charged for that also (around £250 I think).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The real issue is your liability is negligible, as you are not the contract holder, only the bill payer.

Morally, you should explain to VM that you have been paying as the orininal renter relocated and you have been voluntarily paying the bills, but this has to end. They will be unable to legally make you pay, but you may find your credit file incorrectly updated with a default, so you should try to ensure this does not happen.

if that happens just speak to the credit agencies who will sort it out. not your name not your default however you could get financially linked to the account holder which to may cause problems.

i dont agree with this but if you really dont want to/cant pay just cancel the DD and dont speak to virgin that way they wont link you

    Thanks for the reply.
As I am a student,i can't afford to pay nearly £180 as ETC,at the same time i don't want any negative impact on Credit history. l think VM is still holding my Bank details for DD,so they can easily track me,may be i am wrong.

I am looking for the safest option which i can settle with VM.

your just a payee to them at the moment - no responsibility to actually pay

Thanks for the quick reply Soul619.

What does it mean by "link you for the sake of it"?

you can be financially associated to people on your credit file which if a credit application goes to a manual underwriter they may take your link to him into consideration when considering you for credit
