Hi everyone,
I apologise if this has already been asked. I am currently on a contract that ends in a few months. I am happy with my phone and want to move to PAYG with a different network. Is it possible to port numbers between contract phones and PAYG. Will a PAYG sim card work in a contract phone?
Thanks

Yes, it is possible. No problems whatsoever.
The phone cannot be 'contract' or 'PAYG'. It can be either locked to some network or unlocked to all networks. If it is locked you need to have it unlocked if you move to a different network. And it has to be '3g' to work on '3' network.0 -
If you are cancelling your contract, call your provider to give notice a month before the end date (that'll be 30 days) to avoid getting an extra bill.
They'll give you a PAC (port authorisation code) that you can give to your new network to transfer the number.
Couple of points to consider:
1. Cancelling your old contract can only be done after 30 days notice (so you'll still have your last bill to pay).
2. Your PAC is valid for 30 days, so don't feel pressured to use it right away.
3. Depending on the network you're porting to it can take up to 10 working days to complete and there may be service disruption on the day of the transfer
4. After your PAC is transferred your old SIM will cease to operate, so if you have any telephone numbers saved on there, make sure you transfer them first.

That is generally true, however it is wrong to suggest that a phone cannot be contract or PAYG.
There are a range of locks which can be applied to a handset. For example, a handset can be locked to one country, a particular service provider, a particular SIM etc.
As an example, Vodafone gid locked their handsets to PAYG or Contract some years ago
Its unlikely a modern handset will be, but its not unheard of.0 -
Thanks for the response everyone. I'm currently on Tesco pay monthly but was considering a move to GiffGaff but haven't decided just looking around at the moment but at least I know it's possible. Losing my current number is not really practical for me.
