Cheapest 3G data plan?

I have an Android tablet device that has a 3G sim card slot. Most of the time I will have access ro WiFi for data/Internet connectivity. However, for the odd occassion when I won't be within range of a WiFi hotspot i'll need to use a 3G sim card for data/Internet access.

What's the best value plan for ad-hoc 3G usage? Ideally I need a pay-as-you-go plan and one with the longest possible expiry and no need for regular top-ups.

My data usage under 3G is unlikely to exceed 500MB per month.

I buy a Three sim from Amazon or eBay for £11ish.

This is for 3gb / 3 months whichever is sooner. I rarely get anywhere near the 3gb, but for just over £3/month I have access whenever I need it.

(I use this in my iPad, I don't know what kind of SIM slot Androids have, but if it is the same as an iPad you will have fun cutting down the card to fit ...)

it's available nowhere in the US because 3 mobile is a UK network

I haven't found a satisfactory equivalent in the US. I travel there every few weeks and have to rely on wireless points (or ethernet sharing on my MacBook when at work).

Do you happen to know if this plan also includes text messages? And what happens after the 3 months? Does the SIM just expire or can it be topped up?

I think i've found this deal on Amazon but I can't find the answer to those questions!

No text messages as it is an Internet only card (it is probably possible, but certainly none are included). It is cheaper to just throw the SIM away and buy another one. It is possible to top it up.

I found a 12-month, 12GB deal for around £50 in the end (from the same seller who does the 3GB deal). Strangely, it works out a little more expensive than the 3GB deal but it means less hassle for me. I don't really want to change the SIM card every few months and I want to enable text messages so i'll probably top it up after a year.

The Android device is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 3G, so it takes a standard-sized SIM card.

  • I think the LG Optimus S is a Sprint device and Sprint is the only US carrier with truly unlimited data.
